Will a breather filter fail an MOT

Will a breather filter fail an MOT

In itself, no, a breather filter is not a fail. Just look at the manual in the link and try and find it. It's not there so it is not a testable item.

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/internet/htdocs/index.htm

The only reason it may fail is for emissions depending on the vehicle. Have it checked first and if Ok then no probs. :)

Issue Date 10 January 2005 so it wont be in that it only came in a year or 2 ago so will be in the updates sent out to testers

Errrrrrr NO.(n)(n)(n)

That is the same manual as the testers view through their computer. The issue date on the page is the date of release of that page yes, but the manual is the latest one as it is from the VOSA website.
It is also the same one that the testers use. If you don't believe me - ask a tester to show you on his MOT computer and check out the info there. The link I put up goes to the same book.(y)

The oil breather is not a tested item on the MOT test and would be a manual advisory at most - it is however illegal to have oil vapour venting to atmosphere and it must be contained via a sealed loop system back into the engine as per EU regulations on clean air / pollution. Breather filters are not allowed anymore end of.

MOT's are to check a vehicles minimum safety standards and do not mean that the vehicle is actually roadworthy - check a certificate wording. MOT pass does not mean legal either as there are different standards operated by different enforcement agencies.

That's what I am saying - the filter is not part of the MOT so in answer to the OP, the answer is yes it will pass an MOT as long as the emissions are fine at the time of the test.

The MOT is minimum std and doesn't cover every part of the car, only the sections mentioned in the manual. Just because a vehicle passes an MOT does not make it roadworthy; it just means that the parts inspected on an MOT are correct at the time of test.

Another example of this type of area is after market HIDS. By law they should be self levelling lamps and have cleaning on them. BUT if aftermarket fitted many of them don't and so long as the aim and colour etc are correct, then it will pass the MOT. It doesn't mean they are legal though.
Same with tinted windows - not an MOT item and therefore will pass even if heavily tinted on the screen and fronts BUT will receive attention from the Polis and VOSA with their Tintmasters.

If you are caught by either the police or VOSA during a stop and inspection they would have the right to seize the vehicle under new regulations relating to an unroadworthy vehicle being operated on the road - it is also not recommended to have oil vapour being put to atmosphere even through a filter as it can be both a health and fire hazard hence why it is illegal

You may not remember but older engines used to breath to atmosphere - the old Ford pre and cross flows, for example, had vented rocker box caps for the fumes to pass to atmosphere and it was part of a service to clean/replace as required.

We even had proper lead in paint back then and we managed to survive :D:D:D:D

breather filter

hey, my GSR is on its way:D and i was planning to just attach a breather filter to the oil breather hose. Is this recommended? or what is 'circed in?'
would appriciate your opinions on the best solution
