Hello again fellow Fiat enthusiasts!

I was kind of disappointed of the range on my X244 trigano motorhome, so I started looking around for a fuel tank upgrade. I work as an all-round technician at a small workshop owned by my buddy so I know the hassles it may bring regarding fuel sensor readings and weight distribution.

I found a 135L German made X230 tank for the last series with the JTD commonrail engines. Does anybody know whether this tank might fit an X244?

The engines on these were both first gen commonrail so I imagine the pump and sender is just an easy swap. However, do the mounting points line up?

Note: I know here in totalitarian Belgium motorhome won't pass the MOT with an *other than OEM* fuel tank so I'll have to swap it out each year 🥲

Thank you all in advance!!

Kind regards,

Milan from Belgium

Hi Milan,
I doubt that anyone who has not tried to fit the larger tank will be able to give a definative answer. However the x244 uses the same basic body as the x230, but with some minor changes. As the grille panel was changed for the x244, it was described as a face lifted model. There were other less obvious changes such as gearbox and differential, but I doubt that these would affect your proposed change. All that I can say is that there is a high probability that your larger tank would fit. One approach woud be to determine the tank part numbers for the x230, and x244 models. Obviously if identical then your idea is OK.

If it did fit, would you really be happy to change the tank twice a year, to avoid a refuelling stop, and perhaps save a few euros on price differences?
As I remember the tank in an x244 has a capacity of 80 litres, to which you propose to add an extra 55 litres. If we assume that the SG of diesel is 0.8 then you will be adding up to 44kg to the vehicle mass. Can you afford this reduction in payload?
