Bet it doesn't beat a Sony x-black TFT panel. :D

But then again not many things will.
Not many things beat Sonys S**T X-Black coating that's for sure, personally I like something that actually has colour accuracy thanks! Sony made great CRTs, their TFTs however are total poop! But then again you did state that a range of displays were the best, that use varying technologies, without even asking what bias the user wants...

Anyway back on track, Why can't ANY display manu make a TFT that isn't susceptible to insects getting between the backlight & panel?

EDIT: Think I know what you mean, but I wasn't giving an expert, analysed response to a customer focused query. Just joking with another member on the forum.

As for colour accuracy, then you really need a CRT as the phosphorus is the same across the screen therefore gives consistent colour. TFts just can't match the consistency.

Back on topic, I've not seen an insect get into a TFT before. You work in a zoo or something?

Stating a point, various techs give various properties some people prefer one bias some another, as such there is no 'best' display but rather displays which are most suited to a situation. To make such a general statement like that can be counter productive. I probably didn't state that in a 'friendly' manner either (it's too darn hot!)

Yeah totally agree CRTs are the only way to get consistently great colour accuracy, however some LCD panels do a lot better job of colour reproduction than others. Sony's X-Black coating makes the colour reproduction wander in the negative direction

Search the net you'll find people with similar problems, it's not a massive problem but it does effect some.

No problem.. I understand! Which computer is best? Which server is best? Which car is best? Which flat roofing felt adhesive is best?
I get these questions and more and yes the answer does depend on what you need it for. I only know the x-back we have is pretty good. Someone on here posted some 'white text' for amusement value. Only problem was the background isn't white so I could read it although the anonymous poster couldn't until they viewed it on a CRT! Anyway - Get yourself a nice cold one from the fridge and relax!

Unless you have a CRT beside you probably wont notice the difference. Its like selling a HD tv to someone with poor vision.. I can hardly tell the difference between DVD and HD and I've got 20-20 still

What's your line of work if you don't mind me asking?

If your looking for the best quality picture available (price no issue) then a CRT monitor is still the best. You can't get the black level on a TFT at the moment. Broadcasters rarely if ever use a LCD TFT for grading purposes and will insist on a properly aligned grade 1 CRT monitor. Having said that they cost about £13-14K for a HD versions in 17", so you have to be pretty critical.

Personally for home TV use I would still use a CRT and it won't be until HD has been around for a while and the format is confirmed that I look at a LCD TV.

I've had similar experiences with displays. A lot of people didn't rate my NEC display cause with the out-of-the-box settings it was s**t. But the display was very capable just badly set up, given a few min of tweaking the brightness/contrast it was much better, then a quick eyeball calibration delivered a deep & rich deep. The 'problem' with Sony displays is that they have great default settings, however there is very little room for improvement, a lot of other displays feel worse to begin with but end up better after being properly setup.

Anyway - Get yourself a nice cold one from the fridge and relax!
*looks at the 7 coke bottles on the desk* ;)

Every X-black display, even after calibration, has lagged behind the same panel without the X-Black coating for reproduction when comparing a 'good' print to what you see on the screen.

I'm a mechanical maintenance by job, however I'm trained A/V tech and have a fair old history in graphics & photography

Okay a new pic of my display, I've highlighted two areas where there are bugs under the panel :(

Who would do such a thing? What an idiot! :p ;)

Thought you might have worked in A/V. My friend worked for a couple of years as a studio tech with the Avids and things. Panasonic he said (the professional stuff, not the tat in the shops) was some of the best a/v equipment about.

Does your panel come with a dead pixel.. I mean dead insect guarantee? I'd love to hear the convo to the tech desk..

Tech> Hello Dell PC tech, how can I help?
You> Hi, I have a panel with two dead bugs.
Tech> You mean dead pixels? We only repair if there is more than 5 sir.
You> No, bugs.. They were moving before they expired.
Tech> Errr.....

*silence*

Tech> One moment please.....

*silence*

Tech>Hello Dell 2nd line support.. How can I help?

Na, you just say you've got # groups of dead pixels.. tech comes out and fixes it... (or that's the plan)

Grrr... my cheap TFT (Samtron?) has also got one of those b***arding little fly things inside it! Is it possible to take the screens apart and remove the fly, without completely wrecking the display?

yes totally done it before, however it voids your warranty and if you mess it up you've got big problems, oh yeah a sharp tap (no don't hit it as hard as you can) to the top &/or side may dislodge the critter to the bottom of the display.

I just said it had about 15~20 dead pixels & the next day a tech arrives.. Inside 20 min has removed the offending critters from the display

he didn't clean the front of the panel but the back and backlight system.. I did the front... takes about 30s
