General whistling noise

hi, i own a 1.3 grande punto multi jet diesel and have a whistling sound coming from the turbo , has anybody had the same problem ? if it turns out to be a knackered turbo whats my best coarse of action , can i get my own repaired or how much would a new or recon unit cost ? any help would be brilliant thanks .

Have you got an after market pannel filter on it ? When i fitted one to my 1.9mjet i noticed my turbo was whistling quite loudly under acceleration. As at the moment (keeping fingers and toes crossed) mine isn't useing any oil and the engine is pulling like a train i assume it's just part of it's character and the turbo is ok.

Sounds like the common problem of turbo failure on the 1.3. As suggested make sure you check the boost piping for any splits, but normaly you would get puffs of black smoke from the exhuast if its split.

Best place for a new turbo is E-bay. I picked one up off there last year when the turbo went on my 1.3. Cost of a rebuild will most probably more than u can purchase the new unit for.

yes the pipes do get hard when the turbo kicks in so it looks like its a replacement turbo required, i have found prices for a recon turbo but do you know how much i would have to pay for fitting it ?

Hi mate,

Fitting will be a few hours labour, so it will depend on where in the country you are and what type of garage you go to as to how much it will cost. Its not a MAJOR job but seized bolts etc can cause problems.

Some whooshing and whistling is normal on turbo cars, however the whistling associated with a bent turbo fin is MUCH louder. It can almost be as loud as a siren on full boost.
