Whining Sort Of Noise...???

Brilliant start to the new year...My gf gets punched by a big dickhead (She's like 8st and tiny), knocked out and smashes her head on a pool table, collected her from the Hospital at 5 this morning, she's now in a neck-brace hurting like hell, the Police can't do **** all apparently, cause there was only about 50 witnesses...What a joke.
Then on the way home, I go through a speed camera at about 38 in a 30, which I thought was a 40, so likely get a ticket there, as it definitely flashed.

Now something I care about...(JOKE!!)...

My Bravo (1.6 - 1997) has started to make a weird noise. I start it up and it's fine, quiet and all, like 2mins into it being idling, the car starts to make a whining sort of noise that gets progressively louder. (My Bro described it as a very quiet Hoover...)
The sound is coming from near or around where all the belts etc are driver's side.

Not driven the car for about a week, as I've been driving the Focus that I hate, really want to get back in my Bravo! :(

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Thanks!

...Just to add; the noise gets slighly louder when revving.

Wouldn't that be done when the cambelt and stuff was done?

Plus, wouldn't the water pump make the car go ultra hot quickly. It warms up normallly.

Hi,
I would go for either water pump or tensioner , the tensioner should be changed with the cambelt but the water pump isn't ( although it should be inspected for signs of wear etc)
Only other thing it could be is something running of the ancillary belt alternator maybe?

Will have a ponder and see if i can think of anything else.

Kind regards,

Kev Walker

Was talking with another Bravo owner tonight, they've had exactly the same noise on their HGT for over 3 months.

I was driving it around a bit tonight, it really sounds like I've got a supercharger bolted on my car at the moment. lol.

Any idea how much a water pump would cost if my local garage did it?

Thanks for your help.

ermmm,

Well the timing belt has to come off thats about 3 hours then changing the water pump about another hour.
As for cost of water pump you are looking at about 35 plus vat (www.shop4parts.co.uk).

Hope this helps

Wonderful. The timing belt has only just been done 200miles ago.

Oh..as well, do you know if it's safe to drive or not, the garage is about 8miles away?

Hi again,

Well as for driving i couldn't really comment, it may last it may not. I don't need to mention what would happen if the pump bearing gave up !!
But many years agon i had a renault turbo with a whining pump and drove that for about a week mind you that wasn't driven by a cambelt, Don't know what to say really my guess is i would somehow try and get it to the garage by the aa/greenflag maybe?
I would question the garage about the pump, they should have checked it when they changed the belt, take issue with them you never know you might get the labour for nothing worth a try?

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Kev W

Took it to a garage this morning, no choice but to drive there. When I got there the noise had gone...So I looked like an idiot.
They reckon it was most likely just a build up of rust on a tensioner or something over the Xmas period, since it's been damp and freezing most nights and I've not used the car in so long. We left it idling for about 45mins while we were chatting and nothing abnormal happened. I gave it a blast on the way home to shake off any cobwebs and it seems perfectly fine.

He said to bring it back anytime if anything occurs.

Finally my luck may be changing for the better!

Thanks for your help.

Glad to see you got rid of the noises:) Just to add that the power steering pump can make some odd noises

Hi,

Gld to hear it was just a few cobwebs in the system. Juat as well to get it checked.

Kind regards,

Kev Walker
