Hi all,

I got time to drive my car around today in this awful weather and installed my new dash with the reconfigurable display(will talk about this in the other thread). First thing it displayed was radiator fault or something around there.

after driving for some time I realised it makes a whine noise when accelerating, a bit like a supercharger and in second gear it mainly shakes/kangaroos.

could anyone hint at what problems im having?

lots of causes

its about eliminating as much as possible.

First is there oil in the gearbox, should be full to the fill plug, worth checking anyhow

both kangarooing and noise on acceleration could be caused by a faulty engine mount

here's mine still okay at the moment. But the centre has separated and the rubber is starting to crack

easy to test. Brake hard while someone watches the engine. Stay safe 5-10mph is all that's needed (large movement point to dog bone)

try reversing slowly up a slope (violent juddering points to gearbox mount)

try pushing from side to side (points to the one in the photo below)

when its whining

push the clutch in

dab the brakes

knock it out of gear

does the noise change

idling in neutral

raise the revs to 3 or 4k is the noise present or is it only while in gear and moving

Will try this out when I’m free. It only happens when moving I think.

i searched up ’fiat panda common problems‘ and it said that for the kangarooing - its because the ecu needs an update¿

Also the whine noise could be the water pump, when I first plugged in the dash it said something about the radiator.

https://www.breakeryard.com/car-parts/fiat/panda/common-problems - the website I was on about.

yep all possible plus many others.

90% of kangarooing will be a low rev misfire

but my own was due to a faulty accelerator pedal.

Is your throttle body cable operated or flyby wire ?

did you sort the slight glow on your dash ?

I wouldn't pay too much attention to that website. It appears to be a set of generic answers with the word 'Panda' inserted automatically. Much of what I see there is vague and probably written by someone who's never been near a Panda. The squeal being possibly a timing chain is just nonsense, they rattle, not squeal, and good luck finding one on your Panda, do include a photo if you find it, it'll be a first.

Any whine that goes with engine speed will be a rotating component. As Koalar says, you need to change what is happening, to try to identify which.
Does it only happen when driving, or can you hear it when just revving the engine? When driving, mean driveline, so clutch or gearbox. Wheel bearings rarely whine, they more grumble or drone.
If it can be heard with the car stationary, look to the front of the engine. Alternator, aircon pump if fitted, water pump, cambelt tensioner.

Juddering can be a misfire. Plug leads have a short life on these, and if ignored can lead to coil failure. Connections at the engine ECU can become loose, especially the 1.1, and can be tricky to fix. A jerky on/off throttle at very low speeds is a characteristic, discussed many times here, no cure, just learn a technique to manage it. A software update for Panda ECU has never been mentioned here, so I think the breaker website is nonsense.

I thought it was clever. Most is written as buy a part from us

kind of correct. I believe it was for randomly lurking forward not kangarooing, not sure which Fiats or year, doubt there will be any that didn't go back to the dealer under warranty

from memory there was little difference after the upgrade. People still complain of jerkiness on the eco engines. Most of which is poor running and the flyby wire taking over

Pretty easy to spot as the rev gauge will drop to below 750 and pick up again

There's been a lot of software upgrades over the years, unless there is a safety concern there will not be a recall.

Fiat normally apply updates automatically when the car is First serviced, As far as I know there's no documentation. People that have had an update normally report no difference

The only ones I know are. The temperature gauge shooting to the top and the car will not start and lack of power low down then a surge

none I know of cause the symptoms by the original poster, I would be looking elsewhere.
