General Which winter tyres are people going for

Driving in North Wales in the snow last year was crazy, especially where it is hilly. The general problem was made worse by the fact that the councils ration the quantity of grit.

I have bought a set of wheels and Goodyear Ultragrip 8 for my wife's car, as she has to drive 13 miles to work every day. These tyres had excerllent results in a magazine test. What price safety!!

Hi Terry,

Where are you from in North Wales? :)

Well, I too have today put on the winter Vredesteins with the nice new steelies.
Something disturbingly satisfying about cleaning the Duragrips and the rather filthy wheels they sit on, but they are now clean and stacked away in the garage.

The Vred's look good with the recommended Vredestein pressures in, no noticeable squash.

Took the motor for a spin for a couple of junctions along the M1. I will say, I was impressed with the ride. Definitely no placebo effect going on. I have swapped 14 inchers for 14 inchers, but there is still a definite noticeable difference in both ride and tyre noise between the Vred's and the Goodyear's. The Vreds in my opinion are quieter. The ride is definitely smoother with a slightly softer feel without being wallowy. Took the car along a couple of B roads too and the handling felt good in the bends.

I will monitor the MPG over the next couple of weeks. I hope we will maintain the current average of about 50 mpg.

Winters will have a slightly softer sidewall so they move around more and get just that bit more heat into the tyres.

Whilst the weather is still not too cold you might find your fuel economy is the same, but figure on losing 10% in the depths of winter due to the cold.

what's better all season or summer tyres V E20 marked remolds with 11mm of tread?

Is that you GrandeGuy?

The answers have been given so many times Dave, you should know the answer and you should know where winter tyres get there performance from and see which of those tyres posesses the same characteristics....

Well last night i got my 1st "Possible ice on road" warning and had to defrost the car windows this morning, so winters need to be fitted asap me thinks!

Why hadn't you already fitten them? If it's 7.1 degrees your car doesn't automatically catch fire or anything :)

More winter tyre propaganda :p

Maxi, Rui - Insurance confirmed and was about to purchase the winter tyres from mytyres; steel + verds st3 but came across following after a last minute search

http://www.performancealloys.com/Car-Range.aspx?range=500&mid=23

Q. would you recommend going for 15" alloys with Verds ST3, or just save money and go for Steels ?

Car is Red TA. Diff in price is about £35 per wheel.

That's a totally personal choice. If you want the alloys rather than steel wheels then go for it. If you have the money, who is to judge?
