currenty preparing 'a smug grin' while the daily express and daily fail readers panic buy shovels, grit and tinned soup :D

Practiced said smug grin whilst passing everyone on the M1 in the snow covered/slushy lane 3 coming home today. And scurrying around the stuck cars in our road as I drew into my home.

Worth their weight in gold - I recall someone saying it'll never snow in London? Pah!

It's a great feeling isn't it?

I went out for a drive on the moors today in the Panda. Fantastic :D

Anyone see on the news the Range Rover, I think it was in Gloucester, that had skidded and pushed a car through a wall and onto a road the other side? All I could think was with the right tyres that thing would be unstoppable instead the driver probably pulled away full of confidence then found out his 4wd wasn't going to stop him.

I remember having a full blown argument with a blonde at work about her 4x4 in Snow, her going on about how it'll stop her crashing. I pointed out she was full of **** and that my car has 4 wheel braking just like hers, I pointed out she might not get stuck, but 4WD won't enable her to stop any better than anyone else one snow or ice (with the same tyres).

My 4x4 was fine on the snow today :p

Awww, cute little 4x4!
It's a fantastic car, but I just haven't fallen for it like I have with other cars. A combination of the colour not being the best, the seats not being in the best condition and it being a bit sparcely equipped compared to the 500.

Yup, but then again other than the snow drifts there was nothing the 500 couldn't have gotten through with winter tyres on.

In theory yes you are right, but I am not sure if its true in practice... I just got back home in the rav4, empty side roads along the way with compacted snow, the 4x4 can be pushed a bit more, agreed if you hit the brakes the abs comes on but the traction (when stopping) is much better than a 2 wheel drive. Btw not many cars will have the same tyres as a normal 4x4, so she has a good point.

We are a bit spoilt on this forum having more knowledge about winter tyres etc due to the community.

Presumably your Rav4 has some chunky tread to its tyres?
It's all down to tyres and what the manufacturer puts one there. I see lots of flashy BMW & VW/Porsche SUVs with sporty low profile tyres that will do naff all in the snow. I really don't want one of them behind me.

yeah, a lot of 4x4's have normal everyday summer tyres, but in a 4x4 size. You might just about be able to get moving if you have a decent 4x4 system with a locking diff or two, out Subaru has an led on the rear so it's not too bad in terms of traction in the snow.

Yes chunky tyres on the Rav, good point about low profiles on flashier 4x4s.

I am not an expert but won't the full time 4x4 system improve handling when braking over the same tread of tyre on a front wheel drive, rear wheels drives are hell in the snow, I know from having the merc.
