I find that surprising, the book will tell you the spec the oil needs to meet, API grade or SAE or whatever Fiat use. Get one that meets it and you will be fine. Mobil always had an excellent name for oil, a lot of bikers use fully synthetic Mobil 1 in sports bikes which really wring the oil out. I use whatever semi synth of the right viscosity and API grade which is good deal, but not the flat out cheapest in the 1.8 and so far so good up to 110k. Lots in the archives about this

Thanks for pointin out the bleeding obvious there Renegade_8 !!-spose i asked for that really(y) The reason i asked is that on the cd it recommends the fiat stuff thats not available anymore and the dealers said they would'nt use Mobil1 - so not getting a clear answer i thought id ask the knowledge base that is the FiatForum.
I was going to get Mobil1 fully synth 0-40w as its done a few miles , would/does anyone else use this or are there any other recommendations please:), many thanks

my 1.8 weekend has just over 100,000 and i just used a semi syn which is 10/40 runs fine

Garage I use always put Mobil 10w40 semi synth in my 97 R Marea 20v, it's done 106,000 miles on it so I think its probably doing the job quite well.:)

Strange how my 2000 1.8 weekend never ceases to amaze me at how many things can go wrong and usually do on a frequent basis. I had started to check the oil level more often than usual and usually found the dipstick completely devoid of oil, so topped up with any 15/40 oil I had spare. I should point out I do 8000 mile oil and filter changes and so deem any reasonable oil suitable. Imagine my surprise to find the Fram oil filter had rusted through and was dumping oil on the road as soon as it was warm and thin enough to escape the hole in the filter! At 102k miles and still going, I thought I was doing well - seems there may be life in the old girl left for some time to come afterall!
