there is a sticker on the underside of the bonnett, and the spec is also in the owners manual

Synthetic-based oils, grade SAE 5W-40 ACEA C3
FIAT 9.55535-S2 qualification.

SELENIA K P.E.

As RobW said, the best is to go with the oil that Fiat recomends and that is SELENIA K PURE ENERGY.
Also you can go with SELENIA StAR PURE ENERGY (it has exactly the same specifications as K P.E, only it is advertised for Alfa Romeo).
Just pay attention to this PURE ENERGY, because you have also regular SELENIA K and SELENIA StAR (without PURE ENERGY) and those are not recomended oils for Bravo.

If you actually read the user manual it says to use anything meeting these minimum specs. Since nobody sells Selenia I am sure its a dealer money making scam!

if you can find an oil that meets ACEA C3 and FIAT 9.55535-S2 qualification.

why so suspicious anyway?

use the oil that the engine was developed and endurance tested on (y)

why risk anything else?

There's no risk really, if you follow the requirements. You're not driving Ferrari Enzo after all, your engine's not that demanding as you may wish.

Mine's currently with Castrol, put on my first year service (under warranty) by the official FIAT distributor (approved by FIAT obviously).

Next month I am putting ARAL Super Tronic 0W-40, should be even better than the Selenia, at least on book is a higher class АСЕА С3 oil. Two Bravos around here are already using it, no troubles so far.

Bottom line is: as long as you do your homework and read/ask, you are not obliged to buy a brand just because FIAT is promoting it...

Hi,

As I am new to Fiat ownership I don't know what Fiat insists on, but a lot of motor manufacturers now require you to use only recommended oil. I know that all VW and Ford warranties require that only approved oil is used or it invalidates the warranty. If your car is out of warranty then it doesn't matter.

i was a reliability engineer in the automotive industry and it clearly does matter as otherwise the spec would be more relaxed
the manufcaturer has already spent lots of time and money finding the best oil for your car and proving that it works as intended under all conditions to protect your engine

Nobody is arguing about specs, only about different brands within the same spec. The fact that the factory has tested the car with it's own favourite brand does not mean other brands are worse just because they didn't tested them...As most of the things in our lives, it's all about marketing :)

I wouldn't spoil my warranty though, so if it requires Selenia - Selenia it will be. :)

5w 40 5w 50
or 10w 50 10 w 60 (summer)

Castrol Edge 5W-40 A3/B4 meets the FIAT 9.355535-S2 spec, per the Castrol data sheet.

Having had Fiats serviced by main dealers for over 25 years, I don't ever recall Selenia oil being used. Castrol more often than not.
