I've been lurking on here for a while,I can't decide on which engine to go with. I've got about 5.5k to spend, I do roughly 8k miles a year ,12miles each way to work and back. Going to work empty roads average60mph, coming home 6 miles ok final 6 rush hour traffic. I run a diesel atm but no dpf. I don't want any clogging up aggro with the doc so wondered if any advice was available on here. If not a diesel it will be a 1.2, just for cheap road tax and mpg.
Any help gratefully received, Mark

To be fair I haven't experienced the diesel on the 500 but I'm on my second twin air and also have a 1.2 500c. Both less that 3 month old.
My Original TA was a 2012 with 65,000.

My Conclusions are thus:

1.2 is a fantastic little engine, very quiet but maybe a little lacking in power, I've just taken her from 9miles to 1400 in just over a week, its great for around town and sits perfectly happy on a motorway but over 70mph she turns a little thirsty. Keep her at 65mph or under and she turns quite a good mpg.

TA: Brilliant & fun to drive, a pokey little engine albeit sounds a little raspy and a fair bit noisier in the cabin. I've done on average about 1,000 a month with her and the drive is so much more fun. Seems to be a little more economical and higher speeds id only say about 30miles to a tank.

The 500 is a City car and that is where she is happiest having said that both engines seem perfectly happy buzzing along on the motorway.

I would however choose the Twin Air Every time although expect a slightly higher price tag or slightly higher mileage. I'm guessing an 11-12 plate 0r maybe a 13 with a slightly lower spec model.
There are some really nice examples out there at the moment because a lot of people are changing for the updated models.

I had a 1.2 69bhp from 2009 until a couple of months ago and now have a TwinAir 85bhp. Both are capable in town and also at speed but for smiles per mile the twinair wins. Interestingly, I have a similar experience that the twinair is surprisingly frugal at higher speeds but would say it's quieter when cruising than the 1.2. Cabin noise is only really noticeable when accelerating and to be honest that's part of the charm.

Gotta go with the TA too. It put fun back in driving for me. Make sure you get a service record though.

At that price point, you'll likely be buying a car that's outside of manufacturers warranty and you should also consider the potential cost of unscheduled repairs. The 1.2 is by a long way the safest option here; potential DPF issues with the diesel and uniair &/or turbo issues with the TA can't just be dismissed - any of these could give you an unexpected four figure bill. Also routine replacement items such as brake parts and filters will be about half the price for the 1.2. If you really want or need to keep costs to a minimum, consider a Panda instead; they're far better value and, dare I say it, more likely to have been driven in a sedate manner.

If not a diesel it will be a 1.2, just for cheap road tax and mpg.

Seems to me you've got there already. The TA also has cheap road tax, but may cost you more in fuel, despite what the official figures may have you believe. The 1.2 will also likely be cheaper to insure; whether this makes much difference depends on your personal circumstances.

Whatever you buy, keep about £1000 aside for first year repairs; the cars are basically sound, but on the sort of age vehicle you'll be buying, you could easily need to spend money on the brakes, suspension, hatch wiring, battery & tyres - most of which won't be coverable under any sort of warranty - and it all adds up.

Also check the finance offers on new cars; on 8k/yr, it just might make more sense to get a factory-fresh one on a 3yr pcp.

With current Fiat offers, class-leading residuals and likely repair costs, the 500 is a car that IMO is better bought new and traded away at the end of warranty (unless you're handy with spanners; the 1.2 in particular is a good car for DIY maintenance and the parts are generally cheap).

Good advice we got our otherwise fine 59 plate last year the dealer replace the battery and sump due to corrosion.
I've since replaced 4 tyres, both lower control arms (rear bush issue) both front shockers/springs/drop links, rear brake drums (shocking rust on them) wiper blades all round rear wiper arm, breather hose and need cam belt doing plus mats new rear badge etc, so yes put or budget at least £500 in the first year or so ?

I'm not bad with the spanners ,but hoped for an easy ride with a newer car, lol.

You'd be doing extremely well to get all that lot for £500.

For driving the city - the 1.2 will be good.
For more highways - 1.4 or 0.9 (105hp)

the 1.2 and 1.4 are the most reliable engines on these cars.

I also know there's a 1.4 multiair that comes with 135hp.
