General Which Backbox exhaust help.

I think it is a fair warning if the back box outer skin has rotted through likely the middle section won't be far away.

I had my first MOT advisory for a rotten outer backbox skin in 2015. Since then, both the backbox and the centre pipe have remained servicable through five more British winters.

So my own experience is that you might get another five years or more out of your exhaust after the outer backbox skin first starts peeling away.

Do check the rubber mountings each year, though - these are often the first parts to fail and many an otherwise functional exhaust has had to be replaced because it simply fell off the car.

I agree ours was not an issue regarding leaking and just noted on an MoT as an advisory on the outer skin being rotted through. As been in lockdown just thought it ideal time to get on and do some general repairs to the car so our daughter has potentially less issues when away at uni.. The centre box as can be seen in pictures was just starting to rot and nothing like the rear but as it had perforated one must assume also this is a double skinned box.

Regarding the rubbers we have learnt in the family over the years that some of the MPRoC rubber parts seen in the aftermarket are poor quality and limited life so are now very cautious. The originals were inspected in detail and interestingly actually had a material band looped around them which the new parts did not hence we decided to keep originals for now.

I would say though it is very difficult to inspect the two rear rubbers but well worth asking the MoT station to give an assessment during the annual inspection.

Top man [emoji106] I just got a price from S C Motor Factors just under 84 quid for back box. The cars going in for Mot soon so I'll get his advice on the middle section. Thanks for the information mate.
Hi Craig,

Thought it maybe worthwhile linking this post https://www.fiatforum.com/500/481001-1-4s-exhaust-system-sleigh-arrives-germany.html

Given the difficulties we had separating the back box joint and the small cost of the whole system with ALL fittings over just a backbox I would do the full after cat changeover. I doubt very much anyway you could change just the back box without removing/releasing the centre section off its hangers and possibly even having to part the front flange at the catalyst. Also put some protection around the old tailpipe as it tends to rub up against the paint on the back bumper while wiggling around to get off the rear hangers

If you need some of the larger flange pinch nuts I can post a couple out.
