Assuming that is 1200W Peak Music Power, I would be inclined to go for a Rockford P3001. This will deliver 1200w PMP or roughly 150w RMS into 4 ohms.
If the amp you have is delivery the amounts of power I mentioned, then a new amp won't solve your problem. If you use a bigger amp, you run the risk of damaging your driver. On the flip side, if the amp is underpowered then you run the risk of frying the speaker coil.
Apart from the amp, make sure (if it is home made) the box for the speaker is the correct size (use a sealed enclosure) and you have fat as 12v/earth cables plus it won't hurt to run a 'cap so the amp isn't starved of juice when music peaks kick in.
