Technical Wheres the thermostat?

From the front of the car, it's bolted on to the right hand side of the engine, item 11 in the picture

From experience with these engines there is usually a warning sign that the thermostat is going.

This is a picture of a genuine Fiat thermostat, If it is still on the original thermostat the black plastic hose connector in the photo with the arrow pointing to it goes brittle, the early warning sign is the pipe that sit over the connector starts to sweat which leaves a red powdery residue around the end of the pipe that joins on the pipe connector, although the hose itself will be fine & after a while the black plastic hose connector collapes where it has gone so brittle & you end up with all the coolant dumped everywhere, risking head gasket problems or possibly worse cylinder head problems if you don't turn the engine off straight away. On the panda's & punto's you can easily see the early warning signs as the engine bays are quite roomy & change it as soon as you see any powdery residue. On 500's it is differcult to see as the engine bays are quite cramped.

Then once the new thermostat has been fitted you need to bleed the coolant system via the bleed screw, red arrow in the picture. You will probably find a video on youtube of how to properly bleed the system.

As for finding the part online you can get them in pretty much any motor factors which in fact are better than the original Fiat part as most of them have metal pipes instead of the weak plastic pipe that the genuine part has.

Found it on the car, beggered if i can find the correct part to order online!

Your car should have the 69HP Euro 5 engine, so you'll need the one with the built in temperature sensor (like the one in post 4).

The diagram in post #2 is for the previous type without the temperature sensor that's used in the Euro4 1.2 up to mid 2010 (and likely earlier ones still). This type tends to fail open (there's an internal seal that perishes, allowing coolant to flow when the thermostat is closed).

Unfortunately the ones with the temperature sensor are about three times the price of the earlier type.

Seems im getting up to temperature rather rapidly (100s of yrds), so going for the simple cheap things first id like to change the thermostat if someone can point in the right direction (1.2 2013)

Surely even with a permanently blocked thermostat, the engine wouldn't be "up to temperature" in 100's of yards ?
Is it really up to temperature, or is the sensor, ECU or gauge at fault and showing the wrong temperature ?

That's what I'm thinking too. Even if it failed to open it'd be a mile or two, surely before it became evident.

Does the temp gauge get higher that normal, I wonder?

Our 1.2 euros Wales up pretty quick this time of year and is upto temp in about 400 yards then stays there, so its upto efficiency pretty quick. Whereas winter is about a mile.

Its quicker than our 1.2 euro 4 car.

I would watch the hybrid car engine temp but it has the hybrid battery charge level there on the dashboard instead although you can go through the menus to get a temp gauge.

I suspect the cylinder head is a low water content design to aid warm up speed. Consequently once warmed up it will rely on rapid water pump unrestricted flow.

Check the radiator and get some compressed air blown through from the reverse. Use an airbed connector on a garage line. Its amazing what comes out after just a few miles, after many years its not surprising the fins can be substantially blocked. On an older car its also worth draining the system flushing thoroughly and refilling with quality coolant.

Changing the stats is easy but time consuming as removal of the battery and its tray is really required for access.

Some stats are NOT supplied with the rubber seal. Shop4 parts stat I bought was , and also was all metal pipe connections. The seal is only a big O ring pressed into position but worth checking. You will probably need all the hose clips replaced unless you can release the screw-less original clips without damage and the tools to refit them.

I've just gone into our hybrid and the outsidectemp shows 31degrees. I got into the 1.2 2013 easy and its showing one bar on the temp gauge but its not been run since yesterday.

I would probably check your water levels are sufficient and when you next run the car make sure it doesn't overheat, if its heating up really quickly it could just be that we are in the summer as long as the fan cuts in when it gets hot then just schedule in a complete flush and antifreeze refresh.
