My sister recently purchased a second-hand Fiat Punto 2001 (1200) and it has a problem with the speedometer, which we noticed when driving it home.

She was driving at 70Mph on the motorway, when the speedometer was showing 40Mph.

Purchased Haynes Manual, according to this it says it's a faulty speedosensor. We found the sensor on top of the gearbox where the transmission comes out (big black one); but no wires connected to it.

Cannot find the connection block for it. While looking through the manual we also found out that it takes sensor readings of ABS systems.

Any ideas on how to repair this?

Any help would be apreciated.

Hi mate and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

You are correct, if your car has ABS then the sped signal is not taken from the gearbox mounted speed sensor (hence why no plug). Instead it is taken from the 4 ABS wheel speed sensors, one located on each wheel.

The BEST way to correctly diagnose your problem, is to have the parameters checked on FiatExaminer. There are several things that it could be, from faulty ABS sensor, faulty dash binnacle, BCU etc.

Take it to fiat for a diagnostic at least, then they can tell you what is at fault, and you can go about repairing it yourself if you so wish.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Does your car definately have the ABS? If not then there will be a sensor, not the easiest to see either. I have the same problem but looks to be a fault within the gearbox
