Sigh... FIAT wouldn't let me cancel the order of those special tools...

Funny thing is they cannot tell me when will the tool arrive and I still have to pay for them.

Hope the tool will never arrive as I don't need them anymore...

You have the right to return anything to a shop that is in new/ resaleable condition within 2 weeks of purchase. No reason for return required and they have to give your money back. - Consumer guarantee act.
If they do not do this, contact your credit card company (if you paid by card) and they should be helpful with resolving the matter.
I am sure the dealer just can't be bothered with the hassle of canceling the order so is trying to fob you off, but they have to do it, especially if they can't even give you a delivery date or goth the tool in yet.

Thanks again. I managed to cancel the order this time...

I am scheduled to replace the cambelt on 17th of Feb. There are 3 internet friends (met through internet car DIY forum) will join to give me extra hands.

I should have lots of photos to make a nice DIY guide.

I just received my new water pump. However, it doesn't contain o-ring. Should I order a new o-ring or should I use sealant? What kind of sealant should I use?

Anyone got an idea?

I have replaced my timing blet. Engine starts okay... thank God.

It took me more than 10 hours to complete the job! I'm not joking. For me, every corner is a dog fight.....

One important question. The instruction from timing belt kit says fit the belt with right direction (there is an arrow on the new belt). However, instruction doesn't show which direction is the right direction! After my study, I believe it is turning clockwise and fit the belt...

Anyone can confirm this is the right cambelt turning direction (Red arrow in the attached photo)?

Very informative, and well done for going to all the trouble of posting.

I'd have done my cambelt myself, but having read a few horror stories here decided to have it done by a local "specialist".
Pity I'd not read the water pump thing before either, as it's now too late to change it.

However, having just had the cambelt kit (and tvd) replaced, (2ltr JTD) drove no more than 8 miles up the local dual carriageway to have a huge loss of power, coupled with a lot of black smoke and a quite disturbing ( and fairly loud ) knocking noise.

My immediate thougt was that the belt had slipped a tooth, but am not so sure. I've taken it back into the "specialist" to have them diagnose whats wrong.

Now, this could be a completely unrelated fault, but I have to say, it's a bit of a coincidence that it happens so soon after theyve been under the bonnet, wouldn't you say?

Can anybody shed any light as to what may be wrong here?

Well, i'd be inclined to agree, but for 8 miles at least, it ran like a dream..

Can't figure that..

Ah, different then. Thought you meant for the whole 8 miles it was playing up. I wouldn't drive it any further without getting it checked out and either tow it back to them or them to you

Extremely strong correlation that something wasn't done right I'd say.

Also sounds like it could be VERY expensive :(

Have you got legal support at the ready ;)

I have to say it all points at something not being done right at the garage as you suggest. I do have legal advice available, am awaiting the outcome on Monday when they phone me and tell me it'll x squillion £s please.

Has to be something they did as it was damn fine until they worked on it..

First thing the guy said to me when I phoned him was "it was difficult to start", I said yeh, it has lazy glow plugs, if youd have waited 10-15 secs it'd be fine, not related I said.

The when I got there, another guy said, oh, sounds like a turbo pipe is off somewhere. Then they said they couldnt' fine what it was, although he did say maybe it's dropped a valve..

Bit of a coincidence wouldnt' you say.

Hi all,

Hoping you can help me with a few questions regarding fitting a new cambelt on a 2.4 10v JTD engine (Alfa 156) .

Ive read somewhere that the procudure for the 2.4 is the same same for the 1.9 JTD, can anyone confirm?

Also noticed that the procedure mentioned earlier in this thread does not mention the use of a tension gauge, is a tension gauge required to correctly tension the new belt?

Appreciate any help

Hi stumpi
Hope I’m wrong but.
Sounds more like they have tensioned the belt wrong, it’s either too tight and seized the tension roller (usually accompanied by a burning rubber smell), the belt gets hot stretches and allows it to jump a tooth.
Or too loose which has the same effect but without the rubber smell.
Either way the probability is the piston has hit the valve hence the smoke loss of power, so either way it’s down to your fitter.
As for it dropping a valve that’s bullsh*t to try to cover up the cock up they made.
The valve hasn’t dropped its bent!

As a general rule of thumb the cam belt should just be able to be twisted 90 degrees on the longest run, after the engine has been turned by hand.
Good luck
