I have recently finished a motorhome conversion on my ducato and went to norfolk for a little break this week. On wednesday eve i went to start the van and it just spun over. Tried 3 or 4 times and not wanting to annoy other site users i called the recovery line to get a mech out to look at it. A local yokel arrived 15 minutes later, sure he was hanging around waiting for a bite.
told him the symptoms and he went straight to the fuel filter, pipe off turn the engine, nothing, no fuel at all. He put it back on the filter, did a few twirls and bends looking over the engine and took the filter pipe off again, tuuurnnn her oveeerrrr, sorry my norfolk accent in type He had fuel so quickly put the line back on and said turn her over again and guess what ? Nothing, it was my birthday as well, we were going to wells for a fish supper on the Quay, he then cracked open one of my injectors, i said woooaaw, should you be doing that with that much pressure around, he just said turn her over twice, tightened it back up and hey ho, next turn, off it went.He said it was an airlock ??
I believe these to be a pressured system but said hey ho whatever and got off th the cod and chips. All was well for the evening and indeed in the morning. But when we parked up at holkham, took the dogs for a run, returned to the van Nothing, same thing. We were actually leaving from there to come back home. Called the hotline again, he came out but this time could do nothing, i said how about trying your code reader to see if anythings occuring ? oooo rrrr he said but his reader could not connect with the van. We settled on a ride home on the truck as we were getting nowhere at the lakeside.I am not a mechanic but am not daft. I thought ok no fuel, checked the fuses and relay, still nothing. disconnected the plug on the in tank pump and checked for a short 12v feed upon key turn, Nothing but a 0.035 reading so just a nominal trace which means deeper probs. I then happened to note the lock symbol on the dash so read my manual and here we are. the fault symbol stays on when the key is turned to MAR position, so please can someone tell me where now ? i had a bump in the van last july on the nearside which involved remov al of several items connected to the nsf chassis area to facilitate repairs. I have read here that earth points could be to blame, not being tightened correctly etc, if so where am i to look for them and please tell me in laymans terms as i do suffer from old age memory....
My key could be to blame so does it mean new keys or recoding ?
Getting ahead of myself here, i removed the pump from the tank and did a manual 12v feed to it and it spat like a python so that puts the pump in the clear.
could you please help me with this matter and i promise to post phots of the conversion for you all to see as i am really proud of it
Thanks for your help with this matter, i have kept it light hearted as i actually feel like crying
This is my post from technical. I have since posting removed ns headlight. Cleaned scraped and made the fuse box and wiring like new. Fitted new earth strap after cleaning surfaces. Topped up and charged battery and still no joy. A really big thank you to the guys and or indeed girls for their invaluable input so far. I am just hoping general category may open more avenues for trial
Many thanks to you all
Can anyone tell me what the big fuse serves and the 2 capped off wiring parts I am holding ?

Age and engine?
Lock symbol. Do you mean key symbol with CODE written on it?

That is immobiliser on older vans. Fuel will not pump if this is lit.

Check and replace earth leads around engine or add some too! Try disconnect earth lead for battery count to ten and try engine again..... Cures mine temporarily.

Hi charlie and jev
I hope sending the log book pic helps with most info you need.
The van is in top condition considering its mileage. bought it off a courier friend who owned from new and sat on motorways.
it had a new turbo fitted in september 2016 as the boost pipe was faulty.
It is fully serviced up to date and is due in september.
i had a new starter motor fitted in january this year. The last fill up of fuel was BP at guyhirn which was £60. before that it was £20 at tesco. i try to use shell all the time but sometimes not in the right spot.
I really need to get it started to at least get me to work so as i can get it looked at. i am forward facing down my drive and it is literally impossible to trailer load in the position its in due to the road and shipping lengh getting it loaded.
i am going to fit another earth strap this week or maybe 2.
what i have done so far is remove ns headlight, clean up everything, nthing really looked amiss. Checked all fuses, made proper any shabby cable coverings. removed the old earth strap and replaced it with a new 6mm pure copper strap, scraping to bare metals for good connections before fitting.
topped up and recharged the battery overnight, still no joy though ?
i have added some pics of the log book and the dash lights, if you need more just let me know.
i wondered whether it could be to do with the starter motor but would that cause the immobiliser problem. it just turns over and over and the light stays put !!!!
thanks guys:worship:

It is strange in so far as the first time he removed the fuel inlet to the filter he had no response on engine turn over. he went around the front of the engine tapping this and flicking that and next time he tried the fuel pipe he got fuel which kind of points to electrical and something he may have touched, might be nothing but it was a strange course of events......
could however be that i was just unlucky and the problem is further underlying and is now permanent.
i have left a message with minirib asking him to view the post in the hope that he may be able to shed some light. Great suggestion though charlie as you dont get to know people unless introduced and he has been off line for 3 days so would not have seen this post yet anyway.
Thanks

The only thing that will shed some light is a diagnostic check through the obd socket this will tell you more than poking around thats how most faults are now cured now

I do understand that.Problem is i cant get it read until i get to work. the guy who came out on the recovery could not get his obd to connect although it did look like he had it from argos !!

You need a diag tool that reads fuel pressures and for key code faults tells u if engine start up (allowed or not allowed)

Take off the cover of the big fuse/relay box and see if there is any trace of water in there (pull a few relays off to check wether its terminals are corroded). If so, there is probably water in between the layers which make up the circuitry underneath the fuses & relays. All kind of strange transient problems can occur. My ac coupling would get power as soon as the battery cable was connected, even without a key in the ignition.

Yes good idea d004 is always corroding check that but key code light on and key code system travels straight from m001 to m010 doesn’t go d004 or pass go

Hi, Do you only have one key? My original remote control key seems to work all the time, the other replacement one can be temperemental and doesn't always communicate with the immobiliser.

I have continuity between pin 87 of T10 relay and pin 1 of pump.
I have earth at the relay T10 but no 12v.
I have no pos at pin 2 of the fuel pump in tank.
If my van has locked out as the dash display is indicating and I have no obd what next.

Well have you ever been grateful that something happens but annoyed also that it has ??
Tonight after 5 nights of cleaning, testing, contnuitying and all other sorts of tasks i tested for a positive at the plug on the ECU. Pin 91 which i understand is the power to the relay T10 in the engine fusebox to be exact. I had no feed there either so dejected i put the plugs back into the ECU, put the cover on, put the fuse box cover on and tidied up. As i have done every night i tested the ignition and wow, off went the pump and after 4 or 5 turns of the engine it fired up. Now i have no idea what the problem was, or indeed still is.
The initial problem was just not starting. At that point i do not remember seeing the immobilizer light on the dash but cannot be sure. As my earlier post suggests the guy that initially came out looked like he did not know a lot, he went straight to the fuel filter to find no fuel, he opened my third from os injector which i dont really know whether he should have or not.
The second time he came he again opened an injector but to no avail.
when the van started tonight he had not tightened the injector properly and i had diesel spraying all over the engine and bonnet cover, i had a quick dash warning mentioning the diesel filter but turned the engine off. After that it would not fire again so i had a go at the injector with a 17mm spanner and got a slight movement tightening it. I tried the engine again and it went straight away. The symbols have disappeared off the dash now and the injectors are sound.
Question is would the injector not being tight and spraying cause an ecu malfunction as after all it is a danger and that is what the ecu does, isn't it ?
I now have an intermittent warning on the dash to check the engine, a simple message but still a message and would this be a result of the leak and now be a reader issue to clear.
I can now get it to the Fiat workshop to have it looked at but does anyone have any input on this issue as your input so far has been invaluable and following all the tasks you have set me i now have a working motor-home again. But i dont know how i got there :bang:
I will drop a couple of pics of my conversion on later as i am proud of what i have done so far and not too far to go now and it will be finished.
Please let me know if anyone has any answers to my question
thanks
Brett
