whats this sensor

can anyone tell what this sensor is and does anyone know what it does?
what would happen if it was broke or malfunctioning?

cant work out how to put a pic on but it is the sensor closest to the air box on the 147 hgt

Nope, as long if it works right and that it dont have baked oil on the plates
