whats the temperature??

guys, ive got a slightly freaky problem with my motor that scared the hell outta me the other day. it seems my temperature guage goes up and down like a whores drawers. when i start the engine from cold, the guage goes up about 3 quarters (still too much) then drops down to normal pretty fast. Stuck in traffic the other day, the needle was moving up and down pretty randomly then it went all the way up to the red (???,) switched car off for about 2 mins and restarted it and the temp was apparently fine, what the hell is wrong with my car????? any clues guys?? oh yeah the head gasket went about a year ago and the thermostat has been replaced too within the last year. Your help would be awesome, thanks.

Did U try the old slap on the dash, the dash knows to malfunction sometimes, it looses connection; fiat elec.

is there anywhere particular i should slap it? ive got mad and punched the perspex partition in front of the dials but no joy! funny old thing that!

You usually need to slap on the dash (just above the temp gauge)

ive done that and it seems to make no difference. its wierd coz if i take a corner at any speed, the needle almost wobbles, could that be a loose connection somewhere? also, when it appeared to be overheating the other day, i turned the blowers on max and full heat and it seemed to make the problem worse, why is that? cheers guys!

Seems like a loose connection if its moving up and down so quickly - especially if it shoots to 3/4 immediately after starting.
The slap usually works for me and sometimes gives me a little more fuel too

oh well thanks for the help guys. its scared the crap outta me, thought the head gasket was gonna go, again!!! how can i fix it tho? is it a nightmare to do?
