Just recently purchased a 20vt Fiat Coupe, with 57k miles and a Full and extensive s/h. Had it up on the ramps today and discovered it needs two wishbones, a drop link, gearbox casing has been cracked(linkage replacement in past)and sealed with some glue crap thats now slighty leaking, has an oil leak, warped front passenger disc(brand new aswell) and corroded brake lines, oh and needs a drive belt(altenator)hence the squeal noise as mentioned in previous posts. Been quoted around £350ish apart from the oil leak to do the lot, included parts and a full service inc plugs from my mate whos an ex Fiat Mechanic. Im not sure wether to cut my losses and sell or fix her up. Apart from that ive been told she's solid underneath, no usual rust and has a good engine.

What would you do?

Id fix it £350 is not a lot if thats most of the work done to bring it up to scratch (y)

Thats subject to investigating where the oil leak is-i would still have the cracked gearbox casing, the drive belt to do aswell as have the warped disc.

think you need to really weigh up how much the car cost you, to how much its worth to repair it then!

But personally it would turn into a project if I had to choose!

The car cost me £2300, and ive only seen one other 20vt Coupe forsale in the autotrader, in the same colour and same spec with similar milleage of 54k miles and a fsh and the guy wanted £3495, albeit a dealer mind you. "Book" price on wisebuyers.co.uk is:

Retail: £3,328

The valuations quoted are prices you should aim to pay for a used car, not the advertised price. You should adjust your valuation to allow for extras that were not standard specification.

Private Good: £2,528
Private Average: £1,798
Private Poor: £1,148
Part Exchange: £2,018
Trade: £1,832

On whatcar.com is

Dealer £3,050
Private £2,985
Part exchange £2,945
Trade £2,750
Cost new £22,650

Webuyanycar.com offered £1315-and i would return the car to stock, selling of the suspension, aftermarket alloys, air filter, cd player and exhaust. And claiming back the road tax.

i'd fix it tbh, i'd get the £350 worth bits fixed and then look into the box casing leak and other oil leak. worst case scenario, a scout of ebay will throw up the parts you need no doubt.

If it's a clean car I'd fix it.It's not alot of money and you'll always get rid of a clean car like the coupe even if you decided to ask a little more for it.In the past I've sometimes payed slightly more for an older higher mileage car thats in better nick than a newer lower milage one.

P.s You'll notice a massive improvement after fitting new wishbones as I did when mine were done. It'll feel like a different car and you'll love it all over again.

Cheers for the advice guys, well so far im leaning towards getting the old girl back up to scratch. So my friend, (who now works for Kwik Fit-yes i know!!) is going to borrow the ramps in his work tomorrow and have a good look to see where the oil leak is, and we'll take it from there. Hopefully, if not to big a job will have it sorted tomorrow :)

car cost you £2300, repairs = £350
total = £2650

minter from dealer = £3000

I know what i'd do ;)

Hope it all goes well! Sure you'll be chuffed enough when the cars all fixed and 100% again (y)

Thanks for the advice guys. Ive decided to put a forsale thread up for the car. In no rush to sell, and if it dosent i will probally garage it and do the work.

If it sells, i think you'll regret it in the long term ;)

I would like to keep the car, but the guys that i knew that were ment to be working on the car dont seem to have time to fix it, nobody seems to want to work on it for spare cash and i refuse to pay big garage bills and i dont know anywhere else to take it to.
