hello everyone,

my car is : Grande Punto 2008, 8V ,1400 Petrol engine.
This car is new to me, and the oil consumption looks too much for me.
I know that the manual talk about eating 400gr oil per 1000Km.
What is your average oil consumption in your Grande punto ?
I just want to compare my car to your.

Thanks,

Max .M

Althought i have got an mjet mine has used no oil in a year. None of the my other cars have used any oil, the level on the dip stick always stays constant throught out the year untill the service.

I have a 1.4, 8 valve. The car has done 3000 miles. I've added oil once from new. The car will use more oil until the engine has 'worn in', rings are seated and bores settled.

Looks like my car burning oil very well, i need to take in to garage to check
the problem. The engine oil is Agip GTS 5W40 and it's pretty dark for 500km
i made since i bought it and changed the oil.
Any ideas about what can be the problem ? Rings ? Pistons ?

Thanks for reply

Max

You haven't said how much it's burning. Oil becomes discoloured quickly once it's added.

If you do have a problem a compression check will give you an indication of where it lies. Bore wear, ring wear, valve guides etc.

Pull out the spark plugs and have a look. They are often good indicators of what your engine is burning.

if from min to max is 1 liter looks like i lost 250 gram of oil for 500 Km
No leaks visible, also no smoke.

In the UK it's upto 1 litre per 1000miles, so from what I can work out, you're within the tolerance Fiat specify.

Sure you've got no leaks, eg loose oil filter?

That doesn't sound like anything odd is going on. But if you have worries a compression check is your next step. Some modern cars use more oil than others. (The zero oil usage of the Fiat diesels on here suprises me) . My car is three months old , and uses about the same as yours, although it does a lot of motorway miles at about 4000 rpm.

Check the oil weekly. :)

From what i hear around, is that other similar engines "eat" less oil.
That's probably mean that i have some problem in the engine.
From what i know Turbo charged engines "Drinks" oil. But in fiat Grande 1.4 engine it's different.

Anyway Thanks for help. I hope to get back with some results.

Thanks

mjet 1.9... as far as I can tell no oil consumption between changes (10.000 km with 80.000 km on the car)

I doubt it's really 0 but it's not enough to move the dipstick level.

I have hear other people say that diesals especialy turbo models use oil, But in the year i have had the car i have put 7000 miles on it and althought the oil is black and smelly the dip stick level hasn't moved at all.

I have owned two petrol cars before my mjet and either of them ever needed topping up the dip stick never moved, the oil did remain a lot cleaner than it dose in my diesal though. Personaly if i had brought a new car and had to top it up i wouldn't be very happy as i consider the engine to have been made with very poor tolerances with oil either passing the rings or the valve seats.

I have a 1.4 eight valve 70 bhp Punto Sound - new last year and now approaching 4,000 miles.

I have had no reason to put any oil in it yet - it has used a bit, but not enough to bother about.

The indicated level on the stick varies a bit, depending on how level the ground is, and also how long the engine has been stopped

I believe the 1.2 engines are known for drinking a lot of oil. Ours does. whilst our other car 1.4 16v sporting uses a bit but not much.
Got to be careful as neither engine has abig oil reservoir.

Isn't it a litre from upper to lower mark on the stick?

That's a fair old dollop.

Edit to add...

my Mk2B Punto was 1.2, and it never needed topping up... but it was only 54K miles when I traded it in.

Did you peeps with the heavy oil use not drive them hard enough in the first few hundred miles?

1.9 MJet '07

Bought it was 33,000 on the clock and oil didn't budge all the way up to 55,000.
I've just had the oil changed since it's been a while - before you all gasp at how large that interval was - but it's still hadn't got low.

Now..I don't know what oil came with the car, I can only assume the dealer used Selina. I know my service has just had Quantum put in (though I thought they were going to use Selina).
