What engine would have been in this car?

Was in my recently purchased Fiat Punto GT feeling cool. Giving it some welly last night about 2am. Had these lights come up ultra fast behind me, so I cruised at about 50 in the 50 zone, just incase it was the rozzers...It wasn't, it put it's fog lights on and under the street lights could see it was an R reg car.

Got onto the big straight road not far from my house, booted it down in 2nd gear, left it for dust to start with then when I went 3rd still revving high, the car just pissed past me, and very quickly indeed. Turned out to be a black 306!!!!!
Tried to keep with it but was struggling, the 306 just kept on pulling away. Was about 15 car lengths ahead of me before he starts breaking for the roundabout???? Then round the twisties it was just gone.
I would expect this from an Evo or a Scooby, not a 306.

Guy I bought the Punto off said it's 160bhp. I don't dis-believe him considering its got FMIC, Chipped, Exhaust, Filter, running at 18psi. (Way faster than my HGT)
Can't see how any model of 306s could touch my GT?
My mate had an XSi a few years back...It was slow.

Anyone care to guess what this car was?

Regretting getting the GT...now want whatever he had! lol.


Oh, btw, no laws were broken... 60mph was the highest speed we reached of course.

A black 306 you say and left you for dust? Id say it was a GTI 6 ,Theyre alot faster than the HGT and does 140mph.The 306 GTI-6 has a six-speed gearbox and a 2.0 litre engine of 167bhp.

i would definately say its a gti-6 then if its about 160bhp and yes they are very quick

Theres 1 in blackpool in black,very shiny and nice looking motor,she just had it remapped to 180bhp..She got few subtle fods and estimated it 173...she was over the moon with the outcome...

Ill still give her a run for her money lol haha

Oh if you wana look out for a gti 6...look on the door strip

Ahh I need to get my car knowledge sorted. I was looking for 306 turbos are stuff.

I thought XSi was top of the range in 306s.

Didn't look as tasty as that 306 V6 BEAST!

Apart from had a very loud exhaust. Noticed the alloys, but I really only got a back view of it lol.

Says on Parkers they only do 8.5secs to 60 and top speed of 135 mph. So a bit slower than my old 147 HGT? Doesn't seem to add up.

If it was a v6 or a Gti6... They are a lovely little sleeper.

If it were a v6,itd been modified with that engine in,i dont think they made a v6 306....More a 407 v6.

The gti-6 do look standard,only way to tell (from my knowledge lol) is the gti 6 just above the door strip

mate a gti-6 would deffonatly beat a punto gt even if it was around 200bhp ish my old gti as std would keep up with some right cars and when i messed with it i could blast 60 in well under 7 sec's a mate of mine has a rallye that only has a magnex catback and filter and has a recorded 0-60 time of 6.8 secs at york race way....


punto gt mate is nice if you got deep pockets lol keep well maintained and dont kick the crap out of it and it will be a thrill to drive but i think the guy who sold it you has sold you the (turbo deisel) dream and i dont mean that in a derogatry way i just mean he has said it will beat this this and this when infact they arent actualy that fast just a pleasure to drive, id stick with it, rebuild engine and have it blue printed and remaped that should be sufficiant for a punto as the brakes are shocking as im sure you will agree unless you really intend on heavily modding it and in that case id contact avanti motorsport for info on it....

I agree. French cars shouldn't be modified, but I hate all modded up cars unless it's just your basic alloys, exhaust, lowered and upgraded engine parts.
My Punto is a bit chavved up (No bodykit though!), but I have a Focus TDCi as a DD, so this as an evening/weekend drive is good.
Puntos are crap, but nice and cheap!! Picked mine up for 800 with full ticket and it seemed a bargain.
I've done the Bravo 1.6SX, 306 1.9TD (Which was brilliant), MR2, Alfa 156 V6, 106 Quiksilver, Bravo HGT, Now Punto GT
Punto seems the fastest out the lot
So really Italian or French! Really want one of these Gti6s now. lol 2k for a minter...seems value for money.

honestly mate you get a £1200 gti put new cams and pulleys full exhaust and filter and remap and you have one rapid motor but i must stress they eat cam belts lol i loved mine but it was too fast for me at the time as i was still really learning to drive only been driving a year or 2, they say the XSI is better for hardcore tuning but if like you say your not going to tune it then go for a rallye
