General What Engine to go for?

General What Engine to go for?

I stand by my contention that there's no real need for any truly modern general-purpose car to have an engine bigger than a litre and a half - if the politicians were serious about the planet, one of their first actions would be to impose that as a limit.

FWIW I agrree with this, but what amazes me is the sheer cost of motoring..., I do have a commute due to the specialist nature of my work, so do 15k pa in the 1.3MJ costing about £130pm in diesel - but aparently the "average family" spends £280 a month on petrol/diesel, according to an article in "Metro" this week. Those with X5's/Jags/Imprezza's etc must spend considerably more!

It is pronounced Abart yes, but it's spelt Abarth, and as i'm English i like to say it the English way. Bit like Wales has it's own pronunciations/spelling of words: Wrexham = English, Wrecsam = Welsh.

Don't let any Welsh people see that, they'll say it's the other way around :p All Welsh must be in front of the English :p

Wrecsam = Welsh, Wrexham = English.

Yes - Mrs b_u used to do a similar commute in her Panda MJ, very noticeable savings now she's stopped. As you say, imagine doing 15,000 miles a year at 20 mpg - that's 4,500 pounds - assuming you'd have to be a higher-rate tax payer to afford that and the blobmobile doing the guzzling, you'd need to be paid 7,500 pounds just to pay for your fuel. Horrifying.

1.2 is the only way to go! its a good all rounder.

And as somebody else had already mentioned the twinair is shocking on mpg! no where near the figures printed.... but very very fun! i was shocked at how quick it was.. probably not the best for a young lad! it would hurt his pocket keep filling it up

but for an 18yr old new driver! fact is the 1.2 is the best option!!

insurance, cost of car, economy etc..

But my twin air experience is based on one that has 4k on it... cracking car to drive.. but consumption is pants! compared to stated figures.. but i would still buy one as its grin to drive.. and consumption really isnt high on my list.

My 1.2 when i had it even round town was giving 48.5 and i wasnt hanging around all the time...

And have you actually seen what figures a twinair can do? I'm thinking not.....

Because the one we have at work as one of the staff cars has poor mpg. and does not appear to be getting any better. and the fella that drives is doing his upmost to get a better mpg reading but mid to late 30's is pretty poor..

His 1.2 before that and mine were both in mid to late 40's

I do have to wonder how much 'start-stop' is a tweak geared towards beating the CO2 test (which includes quite a long period of idling) rather than much real benefit.

I get near to book on the MJ (allowing for the DPF regen, which isn't in the figures I'm sure) and wonder how much better a lower CO2 car would be, for example the twin-air or even something like the 83mpg Skoda Fabia. Since they both have start-stop and my commute has barely any stationary periods (lanes!!), my suspision is that the MJ would be better anyway.

Ive no idea what he is doing then, mine is up at above 43, and today a good blast cross country and it averaged 42.6. And I dont use ECO.....

Good question.... i know there are lots and lots of variables that will change mpg but he drives to gear change indicator... or at least that what he tells me..

I swapped Mrs Gs 500 from a 1.2 to a 1.4.

1.2 is a sweet engine, its just I prefer a little more zip hence the 1.4. She drew the line at an Abarth. Shame.

However the deal was very good and only costs an extra £30 per year for the insurance. MPG not so good, so has been said its striking the balance for your needs.

PS I will be in touch about that exhaust Neil.....
