General What engine conversion can a panda take?

Hi there all.

Looking to buy a dirt cheap panda (maybe a 4x4 but unlikely, more difficult for what I'm doing), and I want to drop a fair size lump in there, I know they are a tiny car, and have driven a 750 before, it was 'interesting' to say the least but I enjoyed the little car and want another, I know the 1242 punto engine fits in, but have already got one in a punto so after MORE.

I was thinking something mad like a Saab 2.0lowpressureturbo, as they are fairly compact, but are difficult to set up again in another car as there is bits of computer controlled junk all over the spot.

Anyone seen or known of any big panda power conversions??

most of the time I laugh at pimp my ride, and sometimes they pull somew awesome things off, but on the whole they don't have any respect for the small car, and they really slagged it off.

I want a little over 100hp to be ideal, uno turbo, punto GT, y10 turbo transplant would be a damn good start, followed by a full strip out, centre mounted steering wheel, and single bucket, home made roll cage (probably won't do the job, but it might help).

It depends how much work you want to do. The Pandamonium racer has a 1242 unit which has had a lot of racing bits on it to give it some grunt. The 1242 I imagine doesn't need *too* much work I imagine, but I'm no expert.

I think I'm safe saying, though, that the bigger the engine will be the more work you'll have to do. Seen that Punto with a 20 valve turbo Coupé engine in? Seems like a lot of work has gone into that. The same engine in a Panda would be tougher still.

And with all that weight over the front wheels you're going to need much better suspension.

It'd be an interesting project that's for sure.

I think I am starting to come back down to earth, I hadn't realised the pandas engine bay was half eaten up by footwells!!

Mm a 1242 16v with trickers TB's, trick cams, decent exhaust (that will cost the most ) and a total strip out, some nice wide rubber (on 10 or 12" minilites??) stiffer suspension, a tight bucet wrapped inside a homemade cage, a rev counter, and err thats IT!!

I think the 1242 16v could be made to cough out 110bhp with some flowing of the head, and remap to go with the cams etc. BUt that engine alone will cost £300!!! exhaust ~£500, car £20, cams £600, head work £100, remap £100!!!
THat is why I was looking at something big old with stupid power (local scrappy does 9000 2.0t engines inc all loom and manifold,downpipe, ecu etc for £150!!) maybe an uno, or even the box that was the Tipo would be more suited (didn't the Tipo I.Es sometimes have a 2.0 20v hidden under that square bonnet??).

Fastest standard tipo engine is a 2.0 16v unit. There aint many left though so if you're going to get one of them pinch it out of a coupe please

People often drop 16v turbo engines in and occasionally a 20v turbo finds its way into a tipo.

i would love to know where you can find a road worthy panda for £20, and seeing as you havent put mot and tax into your budget i'm guessing those are included in the £20.

The Pandamonium engine was only in its infancy stages needing a lot more work done. This is not to say it was slow. But as it has got not the full potential possible it would when fully developed it becomes clear that the endproduct could very powerful. This means that there is not a need for a road going version to be fitted with a bigger engine, which will be very good for handling.

There was a guy selling a much under £50 panda (Thats what was written) in Newcastle, had MOT for another 5month, and tax would be extra as he wanted to trade it in. think it was a white 750, but he hasn't responded, so he has either decided to not sell it, or doesn't like the idea of me ripping it apart.

Well put it this way, if I were to buy a brand new peugeot 206 from a dealer on a 3yr contract it would cost me something like £70-£110 per week right? Add to that fuel, insurance and whatever else (tax etc) your talking £100 A WEEK to run a new car (sounds right to me).

So if I were to buy car for £20 that had 1month tax and MOT, then I am waaaayy better off than the rest of ya, even if it lasts only 2days!!!

ahh now, theres an idea, a big triumph 4cyl or a suzuki huyabussa would be ultra cool, hows about one under the bonnet and one in the back?? Would cost a fortune to get the power to the wheels but will think about it (a single engine conversion).
