I just bought a Vibe amp and subwoofer and its all connected up,

but one thing i dont know is what the phase switch does (0 to 180 degrees)??? [?]

im confused so if anyone could tell me, it would be much appreciated![^]

Yep thats it, it swaps the polarity of the sub, not really useful unless you have a huge ICE system.

I have considerably more mods, THAN YOU!

ok ok, i clean it up cos its parked under a tree so its covered in cr@p!

Should be up by this evening!

Ps so shall i leave the sub on phase 0' then or 180'.

but could i ruin it if i leave it on the wrong one??

anyway cheers people.

One more thing, the sub box is still loose in the boot, how and where shall i fix it down?

It will improve bass response between your sub and the rest of your speakers, your main amp will most probs be out of phase with the amp on the sub and the Phase control is used to bring the two in line so hence the variable gain from 0 to 180.....
Generally if your Sub is out of phase you can in some cases find that the bass from the sub will actually cancel out the bass from your speakers which can leave it sound pretty duff and the bass sounding weak...

quickest way of sorting it, play a music track which is pretty constant in its bass line or beat....set the phase to 0 as a start and then v slowly bring it round until the bass sounds punchy and solid. You will notice a huge diff in bass response if it is setup correctly, that goes for small or large installations....
A lot of cases where the sub is out of alignment with the rest of the kit can result in you having to drive the sub at silly volumes to compensate which creates distortion and can make the track sound pretty crap by being far too overbassy....getting it all sweet makes a hell of a lot of diff....

Hope this helps....

One more thing which I forgot to mention. Tis not a good idea to try to Phase align your amps at high volumes. Only for the fact that it makes it difficult to find the "sweet" spot when you do find the right phase setting...

When I set my sub up I found that straight from the box it sounded ok....but after tweaking it, I am getting excellent clarity without it being overboeard and bass that really really goes right through you without it spoiling the overall effect....
Tis a good idea to have a bit of a tweak with phase and also EQ settings etc....

If one speaker is out of phase with another, then for the same input the cones will vibrate in opposite directions, i.e. one goes in, the other out. This does have a marked effect in cancelling out the bass response. It isn't so marked in a car but in the home environment there is a definite difference, especially if you are sitting in the optimal stereo position, half way between and a few feet back.

I used to build my own amplifiers back in the old days, in fact I still have my high quality 200W RMS per channel box, built entirely with VALVES!!

Steve's right, its the only useful thing I can tell you after doing Physics for two years!!

With the speakers vibrating in antiphase- eg exactly opposite directions and strength to each other, the sound will in effect cancel out and become non existant.

Eg. If you have a set of 6x9's on a shelf, they will emit sound in ALL directions, even into the boot, also the vibrations of the sub in its box will go out in all directions.

If these two signals meet they will destruct.

If you have your sub phase set wrong, you will lose part of the signal caused when the 6x9's and sub mix, so you would lose some bass.

I know its complicated and sounds ********, but it really isnt. believe me, you'll see

Arse.

Confined spaces like cars are actually one of the hardest places to get a good sound because of all the reflective angles and the drivers all sitting facing different directions. In a perfect enviroment, when two speakers facing each other are driven by a mono signal, there would be total phase cancellation at the point in the middle, as the two sound waves would be of equal amplitude but opposite polarity. Thats why in push/pull bass boxes, one driver is wired out of phase with the other, so that the drivers facing each other act together rather than against each other. The problems with phase cancelation are always complicated in cars where the reflections and the placing of speakers are not straight forward. Best way to get it right is with a pink noise generator of some sort and a spectrum analyser and a good graphic equaliser. But even then it will only be right at one point in the car. Best thing to do in reality is use your ears and know what "Flat" should sound like, once your system has a good "flat" sound then tweak it to your preferences...............

Thank you THEMIGHTY, it seems to fine fine whether on 0' or 180', so hopefully there is no cancellation with the speakers in the first place.
