Technical What does the ignition barrel red tab switch do?

Hi all,

Last night our punto was broken into (for the third time), and the theif ran off with the ignition barrell.

I know that I can start the car with a switch / start button setup. My question for you all is what does the small bell looking device do? It has a red tab on it, with two wires coming out of it. Please see the ebay link below to see what part I am refereing to.

As all I have left from this part of the car is those two wires, can I override this part of the ignition? What is that part and what does it do?

To clarify, everything past the barrel i.e. the switch/ignition position part etc are working, it's just the first half that's missing.

Pretty agrevating having the car broken into again (in a parking lot with other very nices cars around I may add) but any advice very appreciated!

Do you have a mk1 or a mk2 punto. Your in the mk1 section but that barrel is for a mk2.
