weak signal

Hi, ive just fitted a new cd/radio to the misses car and when fitted into the dash it wont pickup any radio stations, but as soon as i remove the hu and hold it in my hand it will pickup all staions, is it earthing out into the chassis, maybe through the ariel, anyone ever had a problem like this, Ant!
