any of you had this problem or any ideas if it could be water pump

the noise stops after about 2 miles of driving but when car been stopped say for 30 min then fired up again it makes the same anoying whine

any help much apreciated

Whats the milage on the car? whining noise possibility being the cambelt tensioner, i had the same whining noise didnt last as long as 2 miles though disapeard after car warmed up about a minute or two, i would think the water pump would be more of an screechin/squealing noise if you end up gettin the cambelt & tensioner replaced better of gettin the water pump done as well, since you have to take cambelt off to gain acces to it.

hi thanks for replies the noise is a screeching thats seems to get louder the more i rev car its screeches then stops then screeches then stops at few second intervals but stops fully after sometimes 5 to 10 min but can also go on as long as a few mile.

i have replaced with new alternator belt but i gona recheck incase a. i have tightened to much and b. possible wd40 on pullys as i tried spraying alternator before when old belt was on.

i fitted a new cambelt approx 5 year ago when i replaced head gasket

milage is appros 60 thou as i had dicky speedo that showed 120 even when stood still and milage meter just went round but sorted that finaly it was a loose solder joint on speedos pcb board.

to be honest i purchased the car 6 year ago for 1500 with only one owner and i have been very happy with it gone through last 2 mot,s with out doing anything to it.

all i have replaced on car in the 6 years i have had it is

complete exhaust
a few brake pipes
head gasket camblet ect
and a coil

but at min i am unemployed so i realy need to try fix this first time round if possible

i will try removing alternator belt and see if still get the noise if not then proves is alternator but noise seems to be more coming through side of engine

how much is it for a

cambelt tensioner
water pump
alternator

once again thanks for any help or advise given

Fitted a new water pump last year amongst other things, gasket etc, and the new pump screeched when there was air/gas around the seal/gland, it cured immediately the system was blead properly, and screeched again when the leaking head gasket pumped some air back into the water jacket. So you can try an old time simple cure by putting some soft soap into the water system, and/or make sure antifreeze is in system (thats quite "greasy"). Make sure that there is no air in block. Replace water pump and fill with antifreeze if all else fails. I have seen questions before regarding this problem and feel sure that thats where the answer lies.

Water pump is around £26 inc VAT for the 1.1 8v engine in any moterfactor shop, cambelt allways replace it with a new tensioner aint sure on a price but it shouldint be higher than the water pump, alternator i dont have a clue just a guess maybe £50-65..

thanks for help all

yes its a 1.1 8v

when i first did head gasket and cam belt i thought about fitting new tensioner then but decided not to bother as did not realise it could cause problems like this thought it just tightened belt my ignorance but after reading a few post and info from you guys i now realise

hopefully i can save money and get this sorted once and for all as it realy is anoying and i dont like idea of tensioner possibly being faulty as if this goes it will cost me a whole lot more if it causes belt to snap or something

so for now i do alternator no belt test and from there replace all parts mentioned

thanks
again for advice
