'Touch wood', but I've never had any serious problems with my car that ever warranted an engine management/injector light to light up.

I always read about people having problems and taking their cars to Fiat to be charged £40-£70 for a diagnostic. So after some thought I decided to go ahead and build myself a custom cable that I could use to connect my car to my laptop. I had to get the right schematics and components and set about building the cable. Once built I decided to test it against my car using a special piece of fabricated software that reads the vehicles ECU.

Total success. I am completely able to read all information on my cars ECU. I can read all trouble codes stored on the ECU, clear all codes (reset engine management light) and view live data, such as air flow, turbo boost, egr %, coolant temp etc.

I'm well pleased with myself and thanks to Von and Tim for checking over my work.

I have so far tried it successfully on a 2001 Fiat Bravo JTD100 and 54 Alfa Romeo 2.4 20V M-Jet. It will also work on the 1.2 Fiat Bravo's.

Very very clever, well done mate,

It cost me £40 to get mine diagnosed when the lambda sensor went faulty.

Two minute job to change it but bumped the costs up by an extra £40 because of it.

I recon with a bit more work I can get it to work on the older Bravo diagnostic ports.

So what are you offering? Diagnostic services or how to build your own diagnostic kit? How much was the software? What is involved in constructing the cable or can you buy it off the shelf?

very intrested in the cable schematics if u could get to work on mk hlx 115??

hope u documented everything for your new guide ...wink wink :)

At the moment i'm just f*in happy I can diagnose my car for free and read all the data from all the sensors. Im telling you all of my success. Its just such a good feeling something you make works especially in a field im not skilled in.

I will be working on a 3 pin cable, the software im using is free, but i need to get a 3 pin cable to work with it, as its not a case of joining a wire to the laptop, you need to build some circuitry.

Only test on cars fitted with an EODB, typically 2000+ Fiat Bravo 1.2, 1.6 and JTD100s.

Im currently working on the ABS and Airbag ECUs at the moment which is coming along nicely. :)

What kind of software are you using? Something you programmed yourself?

I am using Fiat Examiner at the moment. As soon as i get more info i will post it up.

Nice joske, Id like to get it going on my laptop and mk1. Im only 13miles from you. If you need a mk1 to blow/test up Im sure we could meet up or whatever. Thats if i can fix my blue smoke problem.

Haha, blow up. Hope not. Wait till your Injector, ABS or Airbag warning light comes on then I can test it on your car.

'Wait till your Injector, ABS or Airbag warning light comes on'

stephend

hey joske,
you anywhere near wigan , you can test it on my 155 hgt as my injector light is on

gonna get it done next week but if you wonna come an av a play to see if it works your more than welcome

ya its my 2nd one

i know what the problem is, but he can just come an test his device

Ant, your HGT aint EODB compliant, it has the old 3 pin. I'm still working on making that connector to work with my cable.

When i get it made and tested i'd be happy to check anyones car at a later date.

joske i dont know how true it is but last time i had it on the snap on diag machine , my mate (the mechanic) told me there were 2 one was near the ecu an the other near steerin wheel fuse box , its a 2000 model and different than my 99 model . he said its a obd2 connection wotever that is

but when ya can do the 3 pin one ya can test it on mine if ya want

good luck

The Bravo isn't ODB2 its EODB. However if you have a 16pin diagnostic socket in the drivers side fuse box or underneath it then i'll be able to work my machine on it.

The EODB, will work ABS, Airbags and ECU. Bascially all diagnostic ports in one.
