My Stilo Multiwagon is starting to get some gremlins...........

Firstly drivers side mirror doesn't heat any more, I've searced posts on here already so I've seen the diagrams of taking all the door trims off, but is it not possible to change the mirror glass without stripping the whole door ?? Best place to buy the mirror glass ??

Secondly looks like my N/S/F HID lamp has gone, and it looks like a bitch of a job. Anyone got any experience, is it likely to be the bulb, or the ballast, or a fuse or relay somewhere ?? Any tips on where to buy the bulb and how to change it ??

Finally yesterday when I went to switch the car on I got a cryptic message on the display, something like "car security failure". Any one got any ideas ??

Thanks in advance

Phil.

Not sure about mirror, but I know they are prone to corrosion/ dirty contacts in the door connectors (big connector near the door hinges). Take it off and check for corrosion/ spray with contact cleaner.

HID bulbs are available on e-bay from germany (about £50). I removed the front bumper and removed the whole light unit. It is the easiest way to get the bulb in/ out without risk of damaging it. Possibly you could also remove the battery tray to gain access. Each is the same amount of work though.
I have a spare HID ballast if you need it. I have never had a bulb blow yet, but it can happen. Swap the bulb from your other HID light to test it.

Electrical gremlins, first try following the clean D4 connector guide.

Hi,
yes you can just remove the mirror glass and replace, if eveything else on that door is working, i'd think it just the element in the mirror has gone.
You can buy them from shop4parts.co.uk pretty cheap.
I haven't changed mine yet but i've been told they just pull off, fully adjust to one side so you can get a finger behind the glass, after reattaching the electrical wires you can push the new one back on.

Hope this helps.

OK guys, thanks for the responses.

I've had a look at the headlamp, what a ball-ache that looks like !! Luckily I've got access to a mate's workshop at the weekends.......

It looks like the balast is attached to the lamp, so the generic HID H1/H7 style things are just not going to fit. I've spoken to both my local dealers, one wants £101.40 for the lamp, the other wants £120.00 and both want £40.00 to change it, both plus the dreaded, so thats £170 to change a light bulb !!

Anybody else got any ideas, a good source for the lamp ?? I looked on Shop4parts and they don't list it, so I guess I'll have to call them and see if they can help.

On the mirror front everything else in the door works, so I can't see it being the connector, but I'm thinking of getting some electrical contact cleaner from Maplin's anyway so I'll give it a squirt as well as the pesky underseat "Airbag" connectors.......

Thanks again

Phil.

You're joking ?? It's a separate bulb inside the unit ?? Well how can it cost £100+ then ?? Thanks for the heads up !!

LOL at your list of broken stuff - mine isn't quite that bad.......... but I've had the AC leak, the Airbag failures caused by the connectors under the seat, a dead heated mirror and the HID now........ When I did my own service recently I "marvelled" as the quality of the location of the airfilter and pipework, oh and having to take the fuel filter off the bulkhead to change the screw-in filter was nice too............

If you need to change the whole light unit, that would be £650 + VAT:cry:
I hate Xenons.
My car only cost £1200, so I cant complain too much about things not working. Just discovered I should have heated mirrors too. Another broken thing to add. I did at least fix the ABS ASR failure (connectors again)

Yep, just had that conversation with the "main Stealer", when parts bloke said "it'd probably be cheaper to just replace the whole headlight unit, I'll just look it up.......... (cough) holy cowpats !! ok, maybe not then !!"

Thanks again !!

Phil.

He was probably thinking of the price of a normal halogen headlight unit. You cant really change between the two as the wiring in the car is different for Xenons. They have an automatic headlight leveling system, where as the halogens have a manual adjuster on the dashboard.

My passenger bulb went and i couldnt get the bulb out (oil bottle, and battery and a JTD engine aren't a good mix).

Went to main Fiat stealer in Worcester, cost £40 including bulb to change and it took them a hour and a half to fit.

I said (and read on here) that i thought it was common practise to fit them free due to the fact they are so hard to change on the side of the road (or a busy main road where i live). But they said no...I walked away and managed to get a reduced price before leaving the showroom.

One light was awful so had to use the fogs occasionaly until fixed.

Why cant they design a bulb to be easily changed....

Does anyone know how to replace the mirror glass? I took the plastic cover off the front bit of the wing mirror and its a totally enclosed plastic case for the rest of it, no idea how to get the mirror off!

Ok, I've just "won" a lamp off ebay, as advised above, so I guess I'll be finding out how to remove the bumper moulding and extracting the light unit soon !!

My ex demonstrator JTD Multiwagon is loaded with extras, but I'm not happy to use them, as I have had several computer glitches, which involved taking the car back to the Main dealer.
1) The electric seat adjuster took the seat so far forward that I had to get out before I was squashed.( It turned out that the battery needed replacing) I find it incredible that the software allowed the seat to move that far forward. Nobody, no matter how small, could have driven with the seat in that position. It could have developed into a very dangerous situation
2) I opened the sunroof and it would not close again. Requiring a rapid trip to the dealer to rest the computer.
3) Various fault warnings, ASR, oil level etc. These usually reset if the ignition is switched off and on again.
I would never pay extra for things like seat adjustment and position memory, but in my case they came with the car. I think the xenon headlights are rubbish as well.

Just to let you guys know and to say thanks, I successfully replaced the HID lamp over the weekend. Apart from a couple of false starts learning how to do the job it was pretty straight forward. I was glad to have the use of a two-post lift though, as it wouldn't have been much fun on the drive !!

Good job I checked it was all working before refitting as I had a side light out as well and boy would I have been pissed to have put it all together again to find that out !! Would have to be a blue side lamp bulb too wouldn't it........

It seems that this isn't the first time the front end has been off, as the support bracket under the drivers side head-lamp was missing........ and so is the engine undertray !! At least the front suspension all looks ok, have replaced one of the front lower arms and an anti-roll bar drop link previously.......

Looks like discs and pads are next on the list !!

Thanks again guys

Phil.

Your car is perfectly normal then.
Try clean D4 connector guide and Unplug then plug in a few times all ABS connectors. Buy an 096 size battery (the highest capacity that will fit in a Stilo battery tray).
This should cure most of the problems.

Also, my electric seats moved right forward and stopped. I did not know this was due to low battery, but thinking about it now, it has not happened since I changed the battery.

I really hate the Xenons too. Soo expensive and they are not much better than standard.

Hi again Stilo fans !!

Well my Stilo MW has been fine since the summer when I did the HID lamp and the rear axle bushes (boy what a job that was !!) although I think the front wishbone ball joint has knocked itself out again (how long should I expect that to last ??) but the electrical problems have escalated slightly........

Now I don't have heat on either door mirror, nor do I have reversing lights or NS door mirror tilt. Annoying rather than earth shattering, but I'd like to get the revering lights fixed. I'm assuming i.e. I haven't checked yet....... that the bulbs themselves are fine simply because the mirror doesn't tilt and I assume that the lamps and tilt are off the same switch/circuit/ECU........

So anyone have an idea of where I should look, other than checking the bulbs obviously.........

Thanks !!

Phil.
