Hi all
I'm wondering how valuable/important you think it is to have the car serviced and MOT'd by a Fiat garage? I have a local non Fiat garage that has looked after cars for me before so I could easily go to them but wonder if that would devalue the car?

My personal opinion is no, as long as the car has a service history with regular stamps and receipts to back them up you should not loose value - of course its always nicer to have dealer stamps..............

Keep in mind that a car with DTR stamps in the book is probably more trusted than one with a full book for FIAT stamps!!

Originally you would have needed to take your car to a dealer for service and repairs to ensure that you did not invalidate the warranty, thankfully that has changed in recent years.

Hi Shel,

Personal opinion is that Main Dealer history is always going to be best. - especially on a 'specialist car'.

In our case, someone like DTR would be a good acceptable substitute, but if you want to keep the cars residual value, stick with a main dealer at least for servicing.

The MoT can be carried out anywhere.

I used to be General Manager of a BMW dealership and we would not put a second hand car on our forecourt if it did not have full main dealer service history.

Personally, I'll be doing everything I can to keep the B away from FIAT garages....especially my nearest one in Edinburgh which is a horror show.

As an example......I took my Stilo there for a recall about two years ago. The recall involved removing the wheel to carry out the work.

They phoned to say the car was ready and off I went to pick it up. On arrival the receptionist told me the couldn't find the locking wheel nut set and therfore HAD to force the nuts off. Had these people never heard of a phone. Bloody thing was under the drivers seat, not an unreasonable place to put them.

She said it was suggested I buy a new set. I politely suggested that they should buy a new set.

Just one example of a string of idiotic things. One more was my Punto back in the day. The exhaust went and I took it in. They replaced the exhaust but it wasn't right. So as I was about to drive away I had to send it back to the workshop and head back to the waiting area. Tried again and it seemed fine. Soon appeared it wasn't though. When I took it back again a few days later the mech said, yeah I'll guess we'll just put a FIAT original on it then.........seriously. A FIAT garage using after market parts. Awesome.

I'm sure there are good ones out there but from what I know and have heard. they are few and far between. Oh, and really expensive.

Phew, rant over.

My twopennyworth.
From a servicing point of view the B ain't a 'Specialist' car in terms of exotic machinery. We drive a rebodied Fiat Punto, bog std mechanically that could've been bought for £10k brand new in Germany. Fairly Low Rent. Just above a Kia in the Food Chain, perhaps. No whizzo engine bits needing highly skilled care or highly paid & trained specialist Fiat mechanics. Bog Std. Made out of rusty recycled Indesit washing machines. Never a Premium vehicle that can command a high resale price where plus or minus 10% in value is MONEY.
On another issue Main Dealers don't waste time displaying cars that are much more than 3 years old either. They farm them out to the little man. In comparing a oldish B to a newer posh brand BMW on resale ain't juggling eggs with eggs. That's all my rude bit.

The savings made if the B had been 'little man' serviced will compensate for any possible loss of future resale value which sadly has gotta be lowish. What's the potential max percent loss. A little of not a lot.
So in answer to your question imo you'll lose virtually zilch by using a Little Man opposed to a Main Dealer when servicing.
There are Bs circa £2K for sale on Ebay. The B is affected by the credit crunch too. Now if your car was worth 15k to 20k and above premium and newish, different scenario.

Thanks everyone. I think from your answers I will probably go to my local garage. They have made one or two minor cock ups over the years but I believe to be genuine mistakes and would trust them not to try and rip me off. Also have had a bad review of my local fiat dealers from someone on here so think I will stay clear if you guys think it doesn't look too bad in the history.

As the other B owner in Belper I would only use the Fiat dealer in Derby as a last resort, I used them for a service just prior to my warranty running out and they charged me for plugs that they did not renew and didn't change the air filter on a major service. I use T & M motors in Belper for all my work.

Thanks Graham. I'll definitly avoid the Derby Fiat people then as you are the second person to give me a bad review! Is your b shiny grey? I think we might have passed you on the A6 a couple of weeks ago but I realised too late to wave.

Yes, it is Shiny grey on a 54 plate, no mods except for a stainless steel exhaust I had fitted at MIJ performance in Walsall.

I wouldnt think it makes much difference on my car (see avitar) but for your car it would think its important to alot of people to see that the car has been loved and (somehow:confused:) dealer stamps show this to a lot of people.

I love reading your rants! :D

Depends on the "Dealer Stamp" and only if selling privately.

If PXing for a new Fiat then as long as you have a service history then no problem.

All my Fiat cars I have serviced myself (once out of warrany AND during warranty).
I sign the service book (I am a Chartered Engineer) but most impotantly a full Lever Arch A4 file full of all part receipts, and copious notes and serivce check sheets all signed by me/you is what is important.

It is quite difficult to forge service records dating back over a number of years with any convincing statement. If you have kept personal, detailed records then there will/should be no problems.

A car maintained by an "true" enthusiast is 90%+ of the time going to be streaks ahead of a dealer stamp!

Just my honest opinion.

I bought barch from some girl for Italy (High Heel Hole) and there was service book for FIAT... andthat was last day my B see FIAT garage... i believe repairing a car is not such a big deal for local mechanics... it is Fiat not a Maserati or some unknown exotic rocket... everything depends on their abilities...

I'm with Cassa Paulo on this one.

Mind you an exploding can of coke in the glove box rendered my service book illegible!
