Hi,

I've got a really bad oil leak coming from gearbox side of the engine which I've been unable to source. I'm starting to thing it might be the vacuum pump but I'm trying to understand how it's meant to work..

Basically if I turn it by hand oil will come out of the hole that has a gauze & an O ring? I don't really understand if it meant to?

They use similar vacuum pumps on many diesels and often O rings etc don't stop the oil leak only a replacement pump as generally parts not available, the oil from the engine is used to lubricate the vanes in the pump, but the air displaced by creating the vacuum contains oil from the worn pump escaping past the vane mechanism.
I don't know about your engine but if it has done a few miles and has developed too much "back pressure" that aggravates the issue assuming no blocked breathers etc.

Thanks for the reply. So oil shouldn't be coming out from there? I might strip it down to see how it looks inside, the engine has had to have a rebuild from chain tensioner failure so swarf will have been through it.

Assuming a 1.3 Multijet , daughter had a Grande Punto with that engine, I did the chain job and head off etc. due to dip sticks trying to tow start it with wire broken at ECU, she ran it for about four years after I had done my bit, though it was getting a bit smokey before we got rid of it around 150k, so maybe a set of rings would have helped. It was just generally a bit over bodied for a 70hp small diesel so working hard.
5x30 oil OK as long as injectors aren't leaking, diluting the oil which is not unknown.
Saying about the chain, hers had worn through the cover and oil was leaking from there onto alternator belt etc. Obviously vac pump other end.
Some have had gear oil leak from selector area top of gearbox, though that tastes different to engine oil.;)
