Hello, I have a 500 sport, I have been trying to charge my phone using the usb port, it charges so slowly its not even worth it, not even 8% after a 50 min drive. Is there a way to fix this?
My Sport can not play files from my phone so I have a 32gb stick permanently stuck in the USB and my iphone lead is in my iluv cig lighter adapter which keeps phone topped up to max all the time. Obviously if you're managing to play media from your phone somehow this would be annoying
On the 500 I think the port is only meant for connecting and not delivering the high current needed by smart phones. A normal USB port is half an amp but most phones need 1.2 amps and bigger more power hungry devices can need as much as 2.4 Amps, in this instance it's not surprising it takes a long time to charge a phone

USB is a computer industry standard, providing 500mA only.
Whilst most phones now use a mini USB connector, they demand more current to charge them. If you look at your home charger, its output will probably be more than 500mA. You need a charger that plugs into the 12v socket with an output at least as great as the home charger.
What is needed is something like this.
They are available with different outputs, but generally at least 1A is needed for modern smartphones. Must be able to find something like this locally.

Pretty expensive as these things go but I've had it apart and it seems well made.
It's rated at 8A for the cig socket and 2.5A for the USB. Though it doesn't say so I expect that's the total draw for all three USB outputs. The only drawback is that it's a trifle big for the FIAT cup-holders so I took a rasp to the 'cup' and now it's a firm fit.
