Hi all, ive developed a massive Fu*king problem at the momment as my beloved coupe is chucking out loads of smoke and i fear ive been sold a dud.

it was warming up on idle, (i dont drive it till it gets to 90 degrees) little bit of smoke but i know there is a little un-wanted play in on the turbo shaft but i was cool with that coz i knew i was getting a better one in a few months, but i went up my street to turn around come back down and stopped and the smoke was REALLY BAD...white/blue... got to do a compression test on it tonight, scared as i think the rings are fried... any one know that compression i should be getting???

also wny thing else i should check???

need help as ive only had the car 1 week and 5days:cry:

There's no set pressure for a compression test, the main thing you need to look for is that all cylinders are within about 10% of each other. As an example, my old twin cam turbo engine was 165 psi at 106,000 miles.

You say that the problem "developed" so we can assume it was OK when you got the car, therefore it can't be due to general engine wear.

It's unlikely that the rings in all the cylinders have "fried" at the same time, so unless the compression check shows only 1 cylinder low then I would suspect the turbo bearings/seals.

Dave.

i living on a hope i get goOD COMPRESSION on all cyclinders and it is just the crappy turbo, but the stress this car is giving me is enough to give me a heart attack and a head ake, i also need to check the breathers,

WHY DID I BY A TURBO?????:bang::cry:

haha that i can belive, reason for me stressing i had an uno turbo and well...i had a REALLY bad time with that lol you could not belive how much stress i got...

just dont want that much with this plus ive only owned the coupe for 1 week and a few days!

it does mean that i will HAVE to do a turbo upgrade now....:D

but im hoping that every thing is all good else where!!!

If you left it on idle for 5 or so mins then oil will get past the turbo seals and begin to smoke. As soon as you take the idle up by loading the engine it will start to chuck smoke out.

A compression test is always a good idea wet and dry :)

ps what is your oil pressure reading?
It should be 3 bar when reved and around 2.5 on idle.
This is the 1st thing you should be checking. ;)

morning, com check came out good!!! (150 on all cyclinders)

it goes to 3bar on the gauge and idle 2.5 like you said, its all good in that department!

so im now happy to report back that the turbo is shagged so time to upgrade i think!!!

but still willing to do any other checks that people have in mind!!!
thanks to every one who gave advice!(y)

When was the cambelt last changed?
keep an eye on the auxillary belt. If it looks worn then change it.
If it snaps it usually takes the cambelt with it, due to the fact it gets dragged in onto the pulleys. Also check the bottom of the cambelt cover is not warped and coming into contact with the auxillary belt. This can, over time put wear on the auxillary belt.

i will cheack the aux belt when we get a good day in this wet country.

thankd for the tip!!

cambelt was done not to long ago, but i will still be getting a top dog tech to do it, regadless of cost.

and as for the de-cat...

the car is 100% standard Bar heat rap on the on the down pipe.

as i said, im going to get a turbo and see whats happening from there on after!!!!

thanks guys!

looking forward to meeting you guys in gaydon!!

RESULT!!!

my mate got hold a turbo from his mate, only done 100 miles from being reconed by turbo dynamics, 360 bearing ect...

the price is a good too, he put the new turbo on the car then some one smashed into his back end destroying the car!!

HAPPY DAYS!!:slayer:

Just make sure you are not over charged. There are some that believe the Coupe is made in an enchanted forrest and thus can only be worked on by specialists. With magical powers.
Now i'm not saying the specialists aren't good because they are. But there are a lot of mechanics/garages out there quite competant enough to work on these cars.
On the other end of the scale their are poor garages who could make a real mess of things. The guy who owned my coupe had it looked over by Power Italia and the work which was carried out by them is excellent. He then also had a local garage replace an oil sump. Just before I purchased it. The garage had managed to not tighten the dipstick so it started to pee oil out and on further close inspection they had failed to top the gear oil up from where the driveshaft needed removing to remove the sump. These sloppy mistakes could have been costly.

I do my own work. On my girlfriends coupe 20v N/A I replaced her clutch which was time consuming but straight forward, and recently I replaced her cambelt and found it very easy. It took just a few hours to do the belts tensioners and water pump. ;)

i only do my own work on my car every thing but cam belt, reason being, if its wrong, by by engine!!

so if a specalist does it, they replace what they broke!

but good on ya for doing that! massive job and you pulled it off!!

but like every thing else im doing it to my car!!
