Hi guys,
I was on my way back to work from lunch just a few minutes ago.

I changed gear to second from third.
The stick made a "CRACK" noise and got me worried, but seconds later, the gear stick was loose and was not going into any gear.

I drove towards work and almost had an accident.

I got to work and I opened the gear stick cover and tried to see what the problem was.

I saw nothing out of the ordinary.

The stick does feel that it is abit higher than it was before.

How can I fix this? Could this be something I can fix myself?

Or do I have to take it to a garage?

The stick only moves up and down not to any other side.

Just had a mechanic look at it and he said the gearbox is fine.

But the problem is with the stick and they would need a part from fiat, if it is something underneath the gear stick.

Are you still unable to select gears?

Is it loose in all directions, or just up/down, left/right?

It was common for gear cables to break at the gearbox end.

Yes unable to select gears.

Its only loose up and down, it wont go left or right.

Engagement cable has snapped whilst you're still in-gear (hence why the lever can't go left/right.

Open the bonnet and look down the back at the gearbox. The lower cable is the engagement one.

OK the mechanic checked that and said that was fine from the bonnet area.

I've called RAC.

See what happens.

Tell him to use a 14mm spanner or a pair of long-nose pliers. Pop the cable-end off the ball joint and pull the inner cable. I bet it's broken. ;)

OK i think i got shafted by the RAC guy.

I told him the problem. I told him the fix from D4nny8oy

And he didnt do it, or atempt to try it.

He called a "RAC approve" Garage to see if they could get the part and fix it today.

But they came out with £160 with the cable costing £64.95 or something.

I told him to forget it.

So I had it towed home.

I have to get the right cable and get someone to fix it in for me.

Where can I get the cable?
What is its price?
Who near Birmingham can fix it (I will pay you).

The RAC guy said that there are two cables and make sure you get the right one.

He didnt seem like he wanted to do any work, thats why I said he shafted me.

I gave him the car keys and I went back into my office to get my diary and when I returned he was just sitting in the car, I had to open the bonnet for him to inspect.

So while I was away I think he must of scanned around for goodies to steal from my car

Grrrr!!

I know its Friday but c'mon!

It's not a 'fix', just a diagnosis. If he'd been on the ball he could've selected 2nd gear manually so you could get home by yourself.

The part number is on the cable itself (8 digits) and is about 6 inches from the gearbox-end, though you may have to use a mirror to read it.

Hi, is the engagement cable same as a clutch cable?

No. mk2's don't have a clutch cable.

There's two gear cables, one is the 'engagement' cable (up/down), one is the 'selection' cable (left/right).
