Hi There

With the moderate increase in power and substantial increase in weight, it would be nice to know I could stop when it counts...

So I was wondering whether any of you guys have any experience with up-rating the brakes on your Panda's whilst still keeping the 13" wheels...and not braking the bank (apologies for the terrible word-play there)

Any/all suggestions gratefully received as always.

From the fiat range you can use 240mm discs, both vented or non vented,{a bit bigger 254mm discs may be used with 13inch rims and big spacers, or without spacers but with expensive race wheels like track campagnolos or speedlnes} .Vented with 54mm pistons from uno turbo, some palios,sienas also have them. Non vented 240mm with 48mm pistons are common, , secento, cinquecento, some sienas, weak tipos{ 1.1 and 1.4 engne} etc.... But all of them have 10cm between two bolts fastening the calpers to the steering, and panda has 15cm.

Only four cars have a plug&play 240mm non vented discs and matching calpers wth 15cm, that can be used on panda, they are: panda selecta, lanca y10 selectronic{both wth auto CVT gearboxes} and y10 gt {1.3ie} and y10 turbo{1.05 turbo carbed}

If you have basic skills you can addapt any 10cm calipers to panda, look for liquid knight topics about his pandas, there you have "know how" :)

If it was me I would go for the brake stuff from a Selecta :)

Agreed. Panto has Selecta brakes & they are absolutely fine even with all the extra power - as usual VmanC was absolutely right & all the people who said they wouldn't be up to the job were wrong! (y) Standard Panda brakes are actually very effective BUT only if they are set up absolutely right - all that stuff about rubbish handbrakes is wrong too - most Panda's have appalling handbrakes but they are pretty good if set up correctly. (y)

Agreed, I was worried about my pandas brakes before I got it, and when I did get it the brakes were terrible (due to leaking rear wheel cylinders and needing a new brake master cylinder) but after that, and installing new brake discs and pads and giving a thorough bleed and handbrake adjustment they are excellent. The mot tester was very stringent and could not fault my brakes or handbrake, he actually commented how brilliant they are.
 
Pan da brakes that are servoe'd are good, non servoe'd are only adequate and may cause a few hairy moments if the foot pressure isn't sufficient and/or braking distances aren't extended from that of a modern car.

Please don't advocate using y10's for Panda parts, y10's are seriously rare, Liquid Knight used punto gt brakes (and still has them I think) he's your man!
 
Guff II had 14's from a Punto GT.

The Punto GT rear brakes fitted and would fit under 13's but needed custom brackets for the handbrake to work as the Omega beam was in the way.

I have a complete Punto GT rear subframe that I was going to narrow for my next Panda project or widen the arches to suit depending how much room is required.

As far as upgrading front brakes under 13's goes you can't use Cinquecento Sporting ones as the hubs are the other way round. I'd look for a set of Lancia Beta, X1/9 or phase 1 Uno Turbo calipers but first fit the larger master cylinder from a Panda 4x4 for better fluid flow and leverage.

You can get drilled and grooved discs for Pandas like the ones I have on my Fantasia...

add- Just expect the windscreen glass to approach your face that much quicker while doing a Jeremy Clarkson impression of him doing 150 with the top down.

Oh, I almost forgot. Well did forget. To be honest just mentioning it now would have been good enough.

I use a company called Optima Stainless Steel to laser or waterjet cut base plates for carb' conversion manifolds, exhaust manifolds and mounting plates for brake calipers. With Guff II the template stage for the front was as far as I got. I was then going to get Optima to make a pair but ran out of time, money, excuses, etc.
 
I have a spare calipers and rotors/pads from late fso polonez, they are 240mm like in panda selecta or seicento, but with higher disc plus standard girling caliper. I used them with my ritmo 1.5 about 6 years ago? after scrapping the car they landed in the garage.Now, inspired by this topic I am going to work a bit with panda plates and adapt these brakes to pandabella 4x4.
