could someone please give me an idea on what it would cost to supply & fit a new head gasket to a Brava 1.6. 16v?

Now I'm hoping that its just the thermostat stuck open.
Its got a problem where the guage bearly leaves the cold reading in normal driving conditions though does rise in traffic and the heating don't blow too hot either,though its not really using a lot of water-no oily pathes in the coolant either..

See what my mechanic says on Wednesday.

Sounds like thermostat to me..specially if you don't use water, or a faulty send unit.

So it does use some water?

water in the oil is only one of many possible ways a head gasket can fail.
