I assumed that the immobiliser worked off the button like the alarm but as you say if it wasnt working the car wouldnt start.
Could it be that its disarmed and now given up or does it work off a signal from the key when you go to start the ignition?
Is the alarm anything to do with the central locking as this should activate when the button is pressed?

I was hoping to get the original alarm system working rather than buying an alternative one but thanks for your help anyway Craig as any suggestions are always welcome.

The alarm is activated from the remote locking, but the imobiliser is simply always on untill a key with a reagnised code is inserted into the ignition. That way if you choose not to set the alarm (for whatever reason) or forget to lock the car it is still protected (unless you are stupid enough to leave you keys in the ignition)
