Re: Uno Turbo road legal racer

i love this car alsmost as much as my uno that is due in a few months!

where is that front splitter from?

beautiful car!
Thanks very much. Splitter is from plywood + skill! I have to admit that I managed to break it quite badly unloading the car from a trailer. It is very low and extends so far from the front wheel that even small changes in incline cause problems. I will have to re-make it at some point. (n)

:eek::yum::slayer:

actually don't think a message of just smilies does it justice!

that engine must be an absolute peach, though how does it 'drive' if it's road legal? any power low down? standard 1st gear? but then probably weighs next to nothing

really want to have a drive/ride in an UnoT, or punto GT the 1.4 in the tipo used to sound good, and was quite gutsy for a small engine in a heavy car. with turbo it's got to be good!

Re: Uno Turbo road legal racer

Thanks for the positive comments. I don't know how it drives personally as I haven't got out of first gear in a car park. It is on a neighbours drive until I sell another car (keeping Panda). It is set up for purely trackday/sprinting, so probably won't be great on the road. It doesn't run silly boost and has a nice turbo, so lag isn't bad at all. Has carpet in the front and all the normal dash, so again shouldn't be too bad on the road. It's a good compromise.

Badge on the side say "45" as it was originally a carbed "45 Spark".

Brakes are standard, but do have some ducts to cool them which apparently are effective. I'm told by the previous owner that they are adequate if kept cool. The car can corner very fast, so perhaps the brakes are not required as much as if it handled badly!

Mate that is a quick UT, I think "it" did goodwood at the pace of Elises and such?

Yeah, it should be quick. Times I have from 2004 make it quicker than a Honda NSX and TVR Tamora and 4 seconds quicker than an Elise around Goodwood (1:31). And that was on standard electronics! Going to get an MOT on Saturday so I can see what this thing is all about.

Re: Uno Turbo road legal racer

Thanks for letting me know!

I lost touch with Nathan over the years. I'd be very pleased to be able to reproduce your dyno results in my forthcoming (albeit slightly behind schedule..) book on tuning Fiat/Lancia engines if you'd be willing to share them? I don't have any from Uno Turbos. Haven't done many, come to that!

Best regards,

G

Such a shame you don't do fast road engines anymore, although I understand your reasons are to concentrate on race engines? Would love a GC rebuild in the front of the milkbottle for trackdays... I'll drop hints to the Mrs for my 30th :)

Re: Uno Turbo road legal racer

Did you gt an MOT Lewey? whats she like to drive on the road throw towns compared to a nice B road?
Yes, got the MOT around midday and spent the rest of the afternoon caning around Wales. It is better than I thought it would be in terms of drivability and power, and I had pretty high expectations. Obviously rain showers caused problems, but earlier on it was dry so I could give it some. It needs re-mapping because the throttle butterfly can only open half way to try to restrict the boost to 1.2bar since it was mapped with what were later found out to be leaky intake hoses. This means it builds boost pretty slowly and you only have full boost at 4.5k. It revs nicely to 6.5k (GC apparently said it's OK to 8) and because of the high gearing it does a lot of accelerating in this smallish power band.

I can honestly say that at high speeds it accelerates as fast as my Westfield and at very high speeds it is faster. AT lower speeds you are more at the mercy of grip, gear changes and lag. I've never been in a turbo car that can hold the boost like this can, but I haven't had a lot of turbo experience and have only actually owned a Thema Turbo. It peaks at 1.4bar and settles around 1.2bar all the way up the range. Boost control is all electronic as part of the ECU and it is wonderfully smooth and predictable.

I haven't tested the car around corners at high speed or accelerated in first gear very hard, etc. as it just doesn't seem wise on my first outing on lots of crappy roads and with other people about. The ride is fine, even set as it is on full track setting. It's not a lot worse than my Panda TBH and is better damped after the bump has happened! It can be a bit grumpy going very slowly through town when hot, but it just isn't bad. Has a habit of getting the Kangaroo jumps going. I've had worse behaved cars with much less performance. It has the same quirky LSD behaviour as my Panda. Everything runs too cool in general and it needs muffs on the oil coolers as the gauge was indicating just 70 degrees or so, even after a caning.

After the first dual-carriageway blast after my MOT I had a grin as wide as I can remember from any car. So yeah, It's good. :D

:Offtopic:
Is any of your car on the road tho :p ??

Yup Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, you cheeky bugger. both cento's are off road atm yes. Cinq just needs the brakes bleeding before the MOT, i ran out of daylight and fluid while was doing and have been away this weekend. Tub could be put on the road in a day or 2, just needs an injection of cash which i do not have right now..

back on topic, good to hear your enjoying it, sounds good. you will have to get some vid's up at some point
