Technical uno fuel cap- rally style?

hahahaha your so funny grandad, or should it be nurse grandad?

anyway back to the uno turbos, or in 1986uno45s case the basic unos

This thread is mean!
What is wrong with you today - feeling a bit insecure are we? :chin:

In the brilliant-quality photo below that I took on the 24th of February this year, Chas (1986Uno45S) is the one talking to the balding guy. As you can see, Chas isn't exactly a 'grandad'. Also, as well as the 1986 Uno 45S and (at the time) the white Cinquecento, Chas has a rare and non-basic Uno SX, as you also see a glimpse of in the photo ;)

Getting older is something that will happen to you too, you know! :)

Anyway back on topic, the solution for beau is to use a 'strip-it' disc (the type that's made of gnarly black fibres and chews off paint and rust in a flash). The filler comes out quite easily - remove the slotted ring behind the panel, push out the outer plastic ring, remove the filler neck - then clean up both sides of the metal with the strip-it disc and paint with rust primer, finally finish off with a cap that hides the surround as dave says.

Cheers,
-Alex

Alex - thanks! :)

Dunc - yours isn't a stick on Max Power faux 'rally style' fuel cap so it keeps kudos points ;)

Beau - With a Uno you don't hide rust else it will come back and bite you in the arse again big time! I'd suggest that at the least you take Alex's and everyone elses advice and treat the rust as best you can. Ideally cut out the rot and have new metal welded in, though that would require a bit of work. As for the plastic trim ring that holds the fuel filler in place I seem to remember Ant pointing out that they tend to break if you try and remove them. Perhaps Ant will clarify as I'm sure he had to change one on his white mk2?

Also for anyone else with a Uno it's always worth making sure the area under the arch and round the fuel filler is kept clean. It's a bit of a mud trap, which allows mud to collect and sit there merrily rotting the panel away from the inside out. What you see on the outside is most likely to be the tip of the iceberg! As a result my Unos always get a good hosing under the arches when I give them a wash (y)

to remove the plastic ring, u have to do it from the back (in the arch)

u need to prise it off VERY carefully as these are delicate things! I got a mint one here, but im keeping hold incase i ever put my standard fuel tank back on..........actually, WTF am i on about lol! standard tank back on.....nah!

cheers 1986, glad u aproove of mine :)
