Technical Uno distributor pickup on 1301cc carb engine

AFter rebuilding the head on the 1301cc(70 or 75 model) uno single carb engine, the car started up and ran OK, then it cut out and would not start - no spark at the plugs,
Afte some digging around the distributer has died. :-(
It looks like the wires that get the signal from the sensor in the distributer has given up.
The distributer as a 'brain' on the side.
We tried distributers from a 1100cc fire engine and a 1500cc X19 engine and they aint the same.
The 1100cc one is close, but the pickup for the distributer is mounted on the opposite side and wont fit the 1301cc dissy.

Is there another Uno that has the same distributer as the 1301cc uno?
Is anyone breaking a 1301cc uno?
The reason for the vagueness is the engine in the car now started off in a car that was broken for the engine and donated to the slow on going Fiat Uno rally car project (A reg shell)

The famous finned-module failure has struck, I reckon. I'd be fairly sure it's not the pickup. To prevent another finned-module failure, consider adding a ground wire to the distributor body just to be on the safe side - ensure it's at the same potential as the ignition coil mounting. Also, the ignition coil must be the correct 'D'-shaped type (looks like a CRT flyback transformer).

I thought the finned module (which is an amplifier/coil driver) was interchangeable between FIRE (1108cc) distributors and the earlier 1301cc type. I'm fairly certain I've made that swap before.
A similar electronic distributor is fitted to FIAT Tipo 1372cc models (not 1580cc) and, I think, the Mk2 Uno 70SXie (I should know that one but haven't looked).

If you have other distributors around, you may even be able to adapt something else to do the job. Honda Civics and Accords, for example, have an 'igniter module' that has a similar reluctor pickup and similar low-impedance coil (everything mounted in a large distributor).

Another option is to fit a points distributor off a FIAT X1/9, Strada, or early Uno, or (going even older) a 128 1290cc or 1116cc. You then need the traditional-style coil; the D-shaped coil will blow up if fed with switched 12V.

Hi Alex thanks for the reply. The wires to the pickup have fried and frayed and dont look their best, so we wanted to change the whole thing to be on the safe side. The other engines have the same finned module only the pick up sits on the opposite side and it doesnt appear that the module can be removed and turned around.

I understand now. Perhaps I'm wrong about the finned module failure (one usually follows soon enough...)

I have solved that pickup wiring problem before by using 'spaghetti' insulation - woven fibreglass in a tube, like you see on oven wiring, will not break down at high temperatures and in an oily environment. Good luck with buying that sleeving in the UK (I checked the Maplin website but they appear to offer more 1TB hard drives/'B' grade netbooks/Freeview PVRs than they do electronics supplies )

Of course in the industry you have far more range than we have available. I found http://www.birchvalley.co.uk/non-shrinkable-sleeving.html Not sure if they sell to the general public? And then there's http://www.mytub.co.uk/product_information.php?product=346375 - looks a bit more 'retail'.

Once you have it, you can pry the terminals out of the plug (press retaining tangs with tiny screwdriver) and thread the insulation sleeving over the wires.

You can buy the pick ups on their own, I know intermotor do them, usually for around £25.

MMMmm that could be awkward. The chassis the engine is in now isnt the same chassis it was in originally thats been scrapped. I will have a look through some paper work.
