Hi,
A couple of weeks ago, my F-Reg uno failed its MOT on the emissions test, the CH and O were too high, and the CO level was very low - fuel was getting ino the exhaust. I got the head off, and found that it was covered in a nice thick layer of yummy carbon, exhaust valves not closing properly - so I re-seated the valves, got it all back together again. I tested the compression and found that all cylinders were now at the right pressure (give or take a bit).
First question: Is it possible that I've corrected the problem by doing this? The car certainly feels more responsive.

Since I got it back together on sunday, I've found that the engine gets very warm, very quickly - a short drive around town (3 or 4 miles) will get it up to 90C. I'm a bit worried by this. I found that the vacuum advance hose wasn't connected to my carb, and its helped a little, although it still gets warm - I tested the cooling fan thermostat and it seems to be constantly open, so the fan isn't spinning up - does anyone know at what temperature that it is supposed to kick the fan in? The only thermostat-related stuff i can find in the Haynes manual is for the main thermostat, which is the one connected to the block.

Last question... I've managed to knock (at some point) the idle adjust screw on the carb, and now the engine either idles too high or too low - sometimes it can cut out while I am driving (I assume this is related) - Is there any way to calibrate this without a rev. counter?

you might of cured it.depends what the emissions read?
your haynes will tell you what the main thermostat opens at.once it opens, you will find within a few degrees, the fan will run.when you put a new[i hope] cam belt on,did you time it up properly?if it is retarded,it will tend to make the engine run hot.
the idle adjustment can be done by ear.find out which is your idle screw, and which is your mixture screw[might have a cap over it],adjust your idle once hot with no fan running to fast idle.adjust the screw fully in until the engine starts to slow, count the turns outward until the engine starts to go uneven, then adjust back to half way in between.adjust idle down to a nice tickover.job done.

Wahey!
I played around with the carb, and I think I've fixed it by the method you mentioned - thanks sumplug :). A mate (who happens to be a bit of a mechanic) came round and showed me how to bleed the cooling system to get rid of any air - which bumped the temperature down to 60C - even when I was really putting my foot down, so I think I've solved a couple of problems there :D

Now I've just got to get it through an MOT again...
