my girlfriends uno 45 fire engine runs ok all summer and in the winter it keeps cutting out, loosing power, missfireing, you can smell petrol when this happend too, any ideas?

Run the engine in the dark and look for leaky leads. Arcing between the distributor cap terminals sometimes happens when it's cold and damp.
As Chas says (or rather as Chas 'means' ), make sure the hot air intake is in place - it's usually missing so you'll need to buy some foil tubing to replace it (short pipe between exhaust manifold tin shield and plastic airbox).
The smell of petrol tells me that you probably have an ignition problem...
If carb flooding, would drive OK at high revs only. You mentioned "loosing power" so I guessed you would have tried high revs
Also starting would be difficult, would have to hold the accelerator down to clear the flooding. If it starts easily, you probably don't have carb flooding.
ok, it starts easy, high revs not working so i guess its not flooding then,
its not bad all the time, usually after about half an hour of driving, sometimes does sometimes dont
