Does the X250 have full protection between the engine and the road. I have just been under mine and only a third is protected. Something missing ?

Most come like that unless the buyer asked for a full tray when new. there are kits on EBay and you only use the 2 missing bits. They are a bit flimsy compared to original but as long as secured well they are fine. I fitted mine about 2 years ago and no problems, but make sure you have good fixing and don't trust any fixing kit supplied with the tray get some more.

Are you sure "protection" is the proper word?
I think the Fiat engineers expect certain parts to fall off, so they put a cheap plastic tray under it. Or - like under my van - the tray serves as a secluded space where small mammals can rest after gnawing at the tasteful wiring.

Modern engines rarely leak oil which has created other problems. Like sump pans rusting through from the outside leading to loss of oil  I have smeared some oil over my sump pan to avoid this problem - old engines would have been saturated in oil anyway so that would have been unnecessary. Motor factors are now supplying new sump pans which would have been unherard of years ago when they were saturated with oil on both sides so would easily last the life of the vehicle.
I wonder if covering things up with engine trays would make such problems worse - for instance the sump pan rusting away unseen?
