My wife's Stilo MW JTD (54 vintage) needs new tyres (195 65 r 15). The original Dunlops are on the rear (it's only done 27k) and a couple of michelins are on the front. I've always felt cheap tyres are a false economy but I don't want to spend more than i need. I would be interested to hear what people think of different tyres. Conti eco contacts, pirelli powergy, dunlops again???
I don't need the ultimate in grip and performance - it feels like it'll fall over before it'll slide...
Thanks

Seems Dunlop were OE & when replacements were needed they went for the most expensive (Michelin) choice.

Dunlop are argued to be the `quiet’ choice & if you want to stay with the Goodyear-Dunlop Group I’d suggest a look at their Hi-Q outlets … the Dunlop Fastresponse is offered at £65 inc. fitting via their website.

National Tyres are offering the Dunlop SP200 via eBay, at £60 inc. fitting when you pre-book a fitting date - & also the Conti PremContact for around £63?

Whatever, get them fitted (or invoiced) before the end of the month to avoid the impending VAT increase.

Which? Get a grip 195/65R15 Test (2008)
(1) The Bridgestone Turanza ER300 gripped well in dry conditions and gave a well-balanced, all-round drive.
(2) The Pirelli P6 was very safe and was the best tyre in this size for wet braking in a straight line.
(3) The Continental Premium Contact 2 offers a solid drive in all conditions and is particularly good for wet grip.
(4) The Dunlop SP Sport Fastresponse was the quietest tyre in this size. It’s great for wet grip on bends.
(5) The Vredestein Sportrac 3 had the best overall wet grip. However, it’s scarcer than other Best Buys, so you may have to shop around.
Don’t Buy: We found the Wanli S1095 was so bad at braking in the wet that it travelled nearly 20m further before stopping than the best tyre on test. It was also poor for dry grip on both the straight and bends.

New Tyre Help.

Hey,

It is coming to the time to get some new front tyres. However, I am going to change all 4 as the rears are budget.

Quick Question: What tyres would you recommend for 17" Fiat Blades, on a budget(ish).

Any opinions would be great.

Thanks everyone - hadn't considered the VAT increase. could be pirellis or dunlops with enduros getting a closer look.

Re: New Tyre Help.

Well i can recommend these tyres as i had these on the front of the mine when i had the blades and have just now had 4 205/50/16's Kenda's of the same pattern and they are good, Grippy and stable and seem to cut through slush and muck nice.

Wet grip is ok but they do have a limit BUT they do give nice and slowly so no surprizes.

Re: New Tyre Help.

Is that the recommended tyre size then for 17" Blades? The one you mentioned?

Also whilst I'm here could someone tell me the sizes of the wiper blades too please? Me need some new ones.

Re: New Tyre Help.

I forget who listed this site on this very forum but it has proved to be most handy, http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Well thats the size that this site recommended at the time when i first got my blades at you can put in different profiles to check also.

Now i started of with the standard size of 195/60R15 then put in 215/40R17 and you will see there is a very slight difference in size but not really enough to make much difference. You could even have 225/40 or even 235/40 without too much difference in speedo readings.

Wiper blades, Think it might be 19" and 21" springs to mind but stand to be corrected on that. Halfords do a pack of two on the shelve.

Oh and the ebay listing i posted was just to show you what i bought, I didnt use the seller to get tyres from but will recommended a seller on ebay who does stock these tyres.

Re: New Tyre Help.

Recommend away mate. Gonna order them this weekend and just wanted some advice. Struggling in this snow and ice at the mo.

As for the wipers, I was gonna get them bosch aero upgardes.

Well this is the company that i used,

http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/mill-autos/

He has a pair of 205/40R17's on at moment for £63 + £12 postage which i dont think is a bad price when you consider i paid £186 fitted with nice chrome valves.
Looking at the ad postage will be £20 for 4 tyres, not too dear i think.

Scrub that size, Will put your speedo out too much But ask him to get you 215/40/R17's and im sure he will sort you out no problems.

What have you got on your car at the mo.

Scrap that. At the mo I have on 215/45/R17. They were on when I bought the blades. Would I be better of with that tyre size or 215/40/R17?? Which would benefit the car better in terms of wear and performance?

Stick with the correct size of 215/45/R17 or otherwise inaccurate speedo and harder ride (n)

Well the site i listed for checking wheel and tyres differences quote the difference between the 2 tyres, 215/45 or 215/40 as about 1mph at 60mph.
And to be quite honest i dont think you will notice a difference in ride quality between the 2 as the ride is hard with 17"s on anyhow.
Oh just looked the difference in sidewall hight 0.4 of a inch, not enough to worry about!!
As for that make of tyre i have no idea but they dont look a bad tyre and a nice price too.

I'm sure you're right about the 2% speed error (or whatever) but it's still in the wrong direction i.e over reading even more (n)

You might not think that 0.4" would make any difference but I can tell you one thing. It can be the difference to whether you get snow chains on or not :bang: (although in the case mentioned - more chance of getting them on ;))
