Hello
I've just had a part worn tyre fitted to my Bravo HGT.
As soon as I drove off, I noticed a regular thumping/thrumming noise.
I never noticed the noise before.
Is it likely that the part worn tyre is to blame.

Neil

you have answered you own question really neil part worn tyres are a bad idea always but new!!

just think if a tyre is part worn WHY? where did it come from and why was it taken off a car half way throught its life! chances are it came off a car thats been in a smah!

Hi Ash,
I know you're right.
The more I think about it, there must be some defect, i.e a flat spot which is causing the noise.
The only reason I didn't fit new is that I eventually want to replace all 4 tyres together.
Unfortunately, 1 of the tyres had a big bulge in the wall, hence the part worn.
It only cost me £15 fitted.

Neil

Is it a thump or a drone? Some tyres do drone due to the shape and spacing of the tread blocks.

Hi Tom
It could be best described as a constant low pitched, dull thump.
It is apparent whilst under drive or free wheeling.
I have no discernable vibration through the steering wheel.
It does appear to be timed on the approx revolution of a wheel.
As stated, I never noticed it until I had this part worn tyre fitted.

One thought I had is that whilst jacking the car up, it could have damaged a wheel bearing on the opposite side.

Neil

Loads from jacking a car up are 100x lower than what you get while driving, if you did damage the bearing you must have been doing something very wrong ;)

Sounds like a crap tyre.

I'm going to call round tomorrow & get a new tyre fitted.
Something I should have done in the first place!!

Neil

you paid £15 for part worn!!!
my local tyre dealer sells new budget tyres for £22 fitted and balanced for your car

they arnt gerat but it would have done you better than a part worn. all it would mean is that, you wouldnt b able to take corners and roundabouts at death defying speeds.

so if you drive like a grandad then you wouldnt even notice

I have the odd moment, but on the whole....
I drive like a grandad.
How did you know?

£22.00 seems cheap for a new tyre.
I thought i'd got a good deal!

Neil

the best place to get new tyres are from small tyre comapnies nit places like quick fit etc

the place i go to is on a small industrial estate in strood kent the best thing you can do is get the local paper find the avedets for tyre places and start phoning around. it might be hastle but it is worth it if you are buting 4 tyres

I have had this before and it is where the tyre lining comes away from the rubber causing a bulge to develop. Get shot straight away by taking it back to the place that sold you it. It is a defect in the tyre.

As for putting £22 tyres on an HGT are you mad!?!

He should be ok if he drives like a grandad with cheap tyres.

just watch the weather conditions at the moment. Especially down here on the coast all the salt and grit, slippery

When I was a lad........
Took car back to garage today & got tyre changed for a brand spanker.

Problem solved. Lesson learnt.

They deducted the £15.00 I originally paid off the price of the new one.

Neil

waht'd the new one cost ya?

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, just like my gran did, and not screaming like her passengers were!

At the risk of being shot to pieces, the tyre I had fitted was a Federal, & cost me the princely sum of £30.00.

Not the best tyre in the world I know, but far safer than a part worn, and the thumpings stopped.

When the other 3 wear out, all 4 will be changed for something more up market.
