dont know if this will work but i was hopung to set up 2 user on my laptop. one for everyday use and one for when i want a program (say obd II software) to run faster. would this work? does it make sense?

technically yes and i've used it in the past but its a lazy way to make it run faster, just keep the laptop tidy and not bloated with apps

any programs you can shut down will improve performance, including antivirus, firewall, antirootkit, antimalware and any other net security you may have. but the better option is to upgrade your ram so you can run all your apps no problem. if you double your ram you will probably find you dont need to do anything else.

How about have a totally separate OS installed? Keep a Win 98 partition (without any AV etc) free for OBDII and install XP separate?

well i went to pick up my laptop today an it still didnt work so im being sent vouchers to buy a new one. should get a god amount as it is like for like and it had 15.4" screen, centrino and a dedicated ati graphix card.
so ram should be 1gb standard.
would you still recommend having a partition and putting xp on it?
