Hi,

First time in the technical section - I'm by no means a tech expert and won't claim to be, but I do find car mechanics very interesting, and I'm trying to learn more.

I have a Fiat Bravo (07) Sport JTDM - my question is simply, I understand that the turbo is turned by the exhaust gases - will the turbo spool up whilst I am stationary if I rev the engine a little, or do I need to be moving and therefore feeding the car with ambient air? I only ask as I find my Bravo bogs down a little if I don't pull away at ~1500RPM and up, and I'm just interested as to whether this is down to the torque band or the turbo.

Hope I haven't just talked a load of waffle - thanks!

loads of turbo guys will give you a much better answer but essentially as long as there are exhaust gasses the turbo will be turning the higher the revs the faster it spins and the more air it pushes into the engine, when spinning slower there is less air pushed into the engine and less power.

with a turbo if you put your foot hard on the throttle the turbo is not spinning fast enough to supply the quantity of air that the engine requires at this point which is why it may take a delay of a few seconds before the car starts to pull harder this is called turbo lag and the bigger the turbo the bigger the lag (due to a bigger turbo needing more exhaust gasses to get up to speed) so when you say it 'bogs down' thats pretty normal for a turbo and you'll find you get a proper kick of acceleration at about 3000rpm ?

Thanks for the post.

Yeah I get the usual Turbo lag, but it seems ,more noticeable recently, particularly from, a standing start. Perhaps I'm just used to the car? Find giving it more revs helps and I was thinking that from a standing start that the Turbo was spooling up.
