General Turbo diesel conversion

Hi all ,

I own a 1988 Ducato motorhome it is a 2ltr petrol at the moment and it is returning 23mpg It cost me over £280 to do a 1200 mile round trip ! So the time has come to convert it to a diesel but I want a turbo diesel engine one for the torque factor and secondly for the economy. My friend owns a 2001 Fiat Ducato motorhome but the 1.9turbo diesel the engine looks like it will fit mine as the engine mounts are more aless the same but my only concern is if my gearbox will marry up to the later 1.9TB Can anyone please help me on this one ? or has anyone done this conversion ? And does anyone have a 2.5TB engine and box for sale that will fit straight in ?

I did a convertion on a 86. From diesel to turbo diesel. I took the parts from a rusted car, with a broken cambelt. I will recomend to have a donor car. You will probably need more then the engine. Take the gearbox, wheels(if different), exhaust, gearlinkage, powersteering and axel, starter airfilter, waterhooses. I will recomend the 2,5 litre because that was standard at the time and it has direct injection so you dont need the electric for the glowing, it will start right away, mine was a 88.

HELLO AGAIN
I took the engine from a Ducato 1988, and I think it will be absolute the same until the next generation (in 1992 I guess). If you go for a newer engine I think you can do it but you will have to make special parts, so it is not my recomodation.
If you get hold of a car from those years it will be a staigth forward job.
I also renowated the engine with new bearings, pistonrings, seals, cambelt and some new walves.
The old pistonrings where really stuck in burnt oil.
