Hi All

I have a punto 75 engine in my Lancia Y10. Great engine that I want to make better.

It is currently running with a K&N 57i induction kit that has been adapted so that more cold air can get to the filter and also to get the bonnet closed (see below)

It now also has a custom stainless steet exhaust that got fitted last week. Bonus of no cat as the car is a 1987.

I have a turbo, oil cooler and intercooler that I planned to use to turbo this engine. However, I have decided to put this on hold and enjoy the car for a bit.

So what I need for you guys are some suggestions on how to make this engine better. It would be good if I can get 100bhp out of it but not sure if that is easily achievable. I am running the standard ECU, can it be remaped? Any advantage in larger injectors?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Hi,
If this is the 8v engine then you could fit the 16v head. You will need to inform your insurance company of the mods otherwise you are effectively uninsured.....

When I chose the engine to go in the Y10 I considered both the 8v and 16v. I opted for the mpi 8v as there was a view that you could get more power and torque out of it than the 16v unit.

I am no expert on how to get the best out of these engines so would changing the head to a 16v unit to get say 10bhp more be money well spent? Or would a 'hotter' cam and some work to the head for the 8v unit have a better result?

Thanks

Dave

I dont know much about Fiat tuning, but the 8V should be capable of at least 100bhp.
A very useful book for any sort of engine tuning is Tuning the A Series (or some such) by David Vizard. Apart from electronics, if its not in here its not really worth knowing.
Tuning the A-Series Engine: The Definitive Manual on Tuning for Performance or Economy: Amazon.co.uk: David Vizard: Books

He was getting 120bhp from 1275cc BL (Rover) Minis back in the 1970s and he did that with a single 1.5" (38mm) SU carburettor gas flowed to deliver the same as a 1.75" (45mm). So I'd guess a similar size throttle body and MPI injection would be a good start.

The head will probably need some gas flowing work, but no doubt much less than an old BL 5 port A-Series. Then, a hotter cam and a compression increase and a decent flowing exhaust manifold will work wonders.

Think about using forged pistons and balanced/polished conrods. More power = more internal stress.
